Had a semi-emergency recently. Used a plumber for the first time as my regular guy was out of the country.

$88/hour.

What does your guy get?

If I could go back again!!!

What does my guy get? I go get a coffee and get it done.

The guy I used to use was $30 and I caught him raising himself to $50 without permission, he's not longer my plumber.

Emergencies for me are mainly clogged main lines that need a snake ( I don't own), septic tank pumping (too big for shop vac), hvac heating systems (worth the call for liability alone).

My handyman is about as experienced as a journeyman plumber. He can do water heaters, any fixture you can think of, and even re-plumb a basement/crawl from galvanized to supply side PEX and PVC drains. He charges $40/hour or $300 for a full day's work.

A licensed and insured plumber in my town charges $80-$100/hour or prices by the job which usually works out to about the same rate from what I've found. --173.20.xxx.xxx

Could be money well spent. Are you calling plumber for urgent water issue...? If so i would be ok with that. Calling plumber for rehab... like new lines and such I'd get more bids. A plumber can usually solve an issue quickly. So an hour of their time is well worth the cost --99.203.xx.xxx

My plumber charges $85. He takes my calls, squeezes me in if it’s an emergency and I dread the day he retires. Every time I used a handyman there were call backs because it wasn’t done right. I would rather pay for it to be done right the first time with quality materials. --24.61.xxx.xx

Clogged bathtub drain second floor over downstairs kitchen. Snake would not get past P-trap. One hour response time. Friday afternoon of course. No resolution.

I had to take out part of the ceiling in lower kitchen. I put in about four hours of labor doing that and cleanup. Fortunately I had planned to rehab that room anyway this spring. Will include access scuttle.

Two guys returned Monday AM and replaced P-trap with drum trap.

Total job materials was $21.00 Labor for second guy (apprentice) was 62/hr. Total labor was $448

Guess my old guy who works alone at 70/hr. will be coming back next time. --98.11.xxx.xxx

Like any business there are large overheads such commercial insurance on the van, tools, gasoline along with many other expenses. If someone does the job in a reasonable time then it is worthwhile. It is better to have a experienced person that does the job once then there are no other problems. Seen many times people hire a handy man to do work that makes things worse. One of the apartment buildings sold the new owners hired a handyman to fix the electronic boiler controls which usually involves a changing a sensor. The handyman took out the electronic boiler controls then installed a cheap indoor outdoor control then both boilers were firing at the same time along with the heat was turned up as when windows open w iththe bi metal indoor outdoor control turns up the heat. So if $200 was spent so what. Now it is going to cost thousands as the natural gas consumption along with additional wear and tear along the heating system does not turn off on the warmer days or nights. The circulation pumps are using more electricity as well as there is more usage. --147.194.xxx.xx

A brain surgeon woke up one Sunday morning, went downstairs to brew some coffee, when he saw a huge puddle around the sink area.

He quickly started calling plumbers, but nobody answered. Finally one plumber picked up and promised to be there ASAP.

The plumber arrived as promised, looked under the sink, shut the main, went to his trucked, came back with tools and an angle stop and fixed the leak in 5 minutes.

Then wrote a bill and gave it to the doctor.

"Wow, said the doc, I am a brain surgeon and I don't even get $1000 for 5 minute work!!!"

The plumber said: "Well, I used to be a surgeon, that's why I became a plumber" --99.59.x.xxx

I am a licensed plumbing contractor with many other specialty calls licenses. Often clients don't see the value having a plumber with Equipment, Skills and Knowledge who can "effect" the repairs at a minimal cost saving down time. When I quote $500 to "fix" a sewer line that other plumbers couldn't clear, they think that comes to too much money per hour.

One family with 14 apartment properties had 3 major sewer back-ups. They called their various plumbers who for $900 jetted the sewer lines, that resulted in only 9 months until their sewer main had roots grow back and blocked the line again. Then they were quoted from $8000 to $16000 to replace a section of the sewer main.

Now my $500 looked really cheap. I did my stick, camera the line while running my special snake and then used expanding foam to kill the roots -- lasting over 2 years until the roots started to grow back. Then the line could be re-snaked and foamed again for under $300.

Paying a plumber to do the job right at $100 to $300 per hour is sometimes cheaper than getting a plumber to do the job for a bundle -- covering the cost to send their child to college for the next year. --47.156.xx.xx

About $85 an hour average - which means from the moment they leave the place of business until they leave our place. Fortunately, we have a biz within 10 minutes, and they have the integrity to call as they pull out, and then give us their departure time on the written report just before leaving. (I also clock it myself.)

Still - we wonder if we shouldn't be investing in plumbing businesses... --71.175.xxx.xxx
