First off, I loathe car shopping. My wife and I went today to look at some new to us (used) vehicles. I'd rather get a root canal.
The car salesman kept trying to pin us down to one car and I kept telling him we are interested in a few. He kept asking me what I wanted for my trade in, I kept asking him what he thought it was worth. He came in with $x value for the trade and I told him that wasn't going to happen.
I then left him with different types of offers on 3 different vehicles and asked him to look them over and give me a call. I had the kids with me and it was just to go.
I don't like car shopping, but I LOVE negotiating, so we'll see what happens. He may not even entertain any of the offers, oh well, I'll go elsewhere.
How do you all handle car salesman? Any tricks you have? --50.32.xxx.xxx |

It's the internet age. Find out what you want and what options you want and get a quote from the 10 dealers closest to you.
Dear Mr Car Dealer.
I am looking for a delivered price quote for a Toyota Wizbang 9000 XLE with Nav Package #45, floor mats, and parking assist in Eggshell White.
No trade, cash sale, etc etc.
When I did it 10 years ago, I got 4 quotes out of 10 emails, took the best offer to my local dealer and he said he couldn't beat it so I had the lowest quote deliver it to my office, signed the paperwork on the hood of the car, gave them a bank check for the amount, and off they went back to whence they came.
I bet if you do it now you get 9 out 10 responses. Heck I bet they even have an internet sales person. --65.188.xxx.xx |

Opps just noticed you said used cars. Find out what you want - go to CarMax and test drive the ones you like - pick one - go home - research the trim levels - go to Cargurus and run a search on 2015 to 2017 Toyota Whizbang 9000s in trim level XLE within 150 miles of you. Find the one you want - test drive - say to the dealer I found one with similiar trim levels 30 miles down the road for $2K less - show them a printout of it - dicker dicker dicker. --65.188.xxx.xx |

I also hate car shopping, car salesmen are some of the shadiest people in my opinion. They are always switching between the salesmen, sales manager, and finance manager. They throw all these different numbers at you until you head is spinning. I have an Irish temper so my wife is always poking me in the ribs to “keep me in check”. Over the years I have just developed a system when I research the car I want, with the option I want and look at local dealer inventory for cars that have what I want. Sites like car gurus recently have made that much easier, then I determine what I’m willing to pay. Once at the dealer I insist on talking to only 1 person (I don’t play the let me talk to my manager game) once they say that I say have the manager come over and if they won’t I leave. I also don’t let them play the monthly payment game, I insist on negotiating how much the car is, not what monthly payment will be like they like to do. Then if they want to meet my price range that I predetermined, great, if not I walk. They hate seeing people walk, they have followed me out to the parking lot every time it’s like there testing to see if I’ll really do as I say and leave. Even still I end up getting aggravated, I don’t think I’d go without my wife, she keeps me in line. --71.248.xxx.xxx |

I love new car shopping! I even have had friends take me with them when it’s time to buy. Every time though the dealership is mad at me by the time we drive off in the new car. It’s a game I love to play. The finance guy always gets mad because I won’t buy any add on’s . Usually pay cash and that makes them even madder. If financing I take my own plan already in place. They work very hard to beat it. It’s just a game, learn to love it. --75.141.xxx.xxx |

Good advice above.
A couple things I'll ad.
The profit margins on used vehicles is huge compared to new.
You definitely had the right idea as far as the trade in they were asking you about. Always negotiate the price on a vehicle first before ever letting them know you might have a trade in. Then you know you're getting the real price of your trade in instead of them playing games by offering you more for your trade but a higher price on purchase and vice versa. --24.20.xxx.xxx |

I bought a new/used car about 6 months ago. I knew it was a good deal when I got it and apparently the state of PA thought the price paid was too low. They thought the sales tax was underpaid and required that I prove the price I paid or pay the sales tax based on what they thought was fair market value.
I don't mind dealing with the sales people. Usually, I've researched the car I want and know how much I'm going to pay. It doesn't matter to me all of the running around back and forth to the manager. --209.122.xx.xxx |

When you go to buy a car, do you not already know what kind of car you want to go home with? If you know what kind of car you want, you also should already know how many of them are available in your area, and what the price range is on them, and where the best one is in terms of mileage/price/trim/etc.
All used car dealers are local, but in DFW, CarMax is a really good option. They're very good about giving you a good price on your trade-in, whether you buy from them or not. And their salesmen are on salary, so there's not the pressure you get from commission-based salesmen. They're also a great place to go test-drive three or four vehicles on your shortlist, if they all look good on paper, but you want to see how they handle in real life. However, CarMax is a fixed-price dealership... so no haggling.
Another good place in DFW is the Enterprise Rent-a-Car sales center, where they dispose of their fleet cars after a couple of years. They're also fixed-price sales, so no haggling, but they have a good variety of newer-model low-mileage vehicles. You should check out where the rental cars are sold in your area.
One car-buying piece of advice that's stuck with me-- what kind of car are you considering? If there's, like, 100 of them available in your area, that means that no one's keeping them. The people who have them hate them, and want to get rid of them for something else as soon as possible. If there's, like, one or two of them-- that's the sort of car you want, because it means people like them enough to hold on to them, and when they do come available, they get snapped up fast.
Another observation I had-- we were planning on buying a used car in 2009. However, the economy was terrible, and it was reflected on the used car lots at the time. People were hanging onto their cars longer, which meant the selection on the lots was poorer. And the good cars were priced more steeply, because their supply of good cars was limited. So there wasn't really any significant savings in buying something 2-3 years old, vs buying new. So whatever you're looking at buying, see what the price difference is between buying the one you're looking at, vs buying a 2019 model. If your local economy is going gangbusters, used will make sense. If your local economy is uncertain, however, new might actually be the better deal.
Good luck! --96.46.xxx.xx |

It really irritates me when the salesman takes my offer to his sales manager. I don't need a middleman so usually I give them 30 seconds to walk back and then I join them at the sales managers desk. It throws them off at first but then we can get down to the quick and dirty negotiations. Within 5-10 minutes I either have a deal or I'm leaving. It's funny to watch when I do this, usually the salesman will realize he's not adding value and leave. I won't spend hours with them playing games and they figure this out pretty quick. --50.26.xx.xxx |

In the past, I always bought used cars from private owners. I only bought 1 new car. It seems like Carmax prices are a bit high. I looked at Hertz Used car prices online and they seem HIGHLY competitive but not quite sure about buying a used car that was a rental. --99.92.xx.xx |

For new vehicles, like David[NC], I find sending Emails to either the truck or car manager of all the dealerships within 100 miles usually gives me the best price with the least amount of hassle. I also find that if you want to use your credit card to pay for it, they will take of a bit more for paying with a check. On my last truck, when we agreed on the price, I presented my CC to pay for it. When the salesman said they couldn't put a whole truck on a CC, I asked to speak to the credit manager. After a little discussion they agreed to take off another $500.00 if I paid by check.
For used vehicles, I tell the owner of my local repair shop what I'm looking for & my price range. In the last 6 months he's found me a 2003 Rav 4 with 27,300 miles in mint condition for $6,000.00 & a 2009 Dodge PU with a 7 1/2' Fisher plow & 71,000 miles in good condition for $6,800.00. --96.237.xx.xx |

When buying new, I want into the dealer holdback. It depends on what you are purchasing and how much the hold back will be for that particular vehicle. This is the money that the dealer receives from the manufacture after the sale.
When buying used I don’t let them know I’m trading in my vehicle to work them on the best cash deal, and if it’s a price acceptable to me, then I tell them I want to trade in my truck, to see how much they will give for the trade and then start working on getting more for my trade. Most times I end up dealing with the general manager. I do enjoy negotiating. --173.216.xxx.xxx |

I actually love car buying. First, I go to carmax and get a purchase price on the car I'm trading in, and that purchase agreement serves as my bottom line for trade-in. I also look on the internet for prices of the car I'm interested in, then it's deal time.
Just don't be in a hurry and don't be afraid to walk away. Actually I recommend walking at least once, or attempting to. Take someone with you and go as a team. My mother and I made the best team. She'd play the frazzled senior citizen fearing modern technology but still wanting the new car with all the hard to understand gadgets, and I'd be the one focused on the clock, reminding her that we don't have enough time while she's in town to handle this transaction and that we should postpone it for 3 months when she's scheduled to return to town.
We've actually made them squirm. It's fun to watch sweat forming on their brow. One time, the salesman asked us, "ok, what do you want to give us for this car?"
My wife on the other hand is not allowed to talk. One time she wanted the car so bad that she took the dealer's side and argued why his price was better. That was a bad negotiation. I didn't get the deal I hoped for. --108.69.xxx.xxx |
