We are remodeling an older single family house and I hired a drywall guy to do some of the work. He did a good job hanging and texturing drywall in the kitchen and bath. One of the bedroom and a hallway had old wallpaper on it, so i bought some wall paper remover spray and I was set to remove the the old paper. My drywall guy assured me we dont need to remove the old paper first. He assured me he can skim coat plaster over the top and then cut out all the bubble pockets that are created and fill and texture.

Long story short, i have bubbled up wall paper under the textured walls and the guy was back peddling on hownhe was going to make those walls look good. He obviously didnt know what he was talking about.

Another long story short, he is no longer employed by me and l am left with a project to fix. At least he was finished with the rest of the project and this was the last room he had to do. Unfortunately i had paid him for 3/4 of the job and I'd say he has it about 1/2 done.

Lesson learned,

Q, I guess that is another reason we need to get more than one voice on the best way to tackle a project. Especially important when what they say just doesn't sound right. --24.20.xxx.xxx

It's rare that wallpaper bubbles. I've painted tons ofnit with no bubbling. --50.32.xxx.xxx

Some wallpaper will bubble in my experience. It depends on what kind of glue was used when it was put on. The really old stuff used horse glue (gross) and stuff within the last 30 years mostly used a water base glue. It's the water base glue that bubbles because it can react with the water in the drywall mud.

I've found the best cure, for me, is to coat the wallpaper with a product that bonds the paper.

Once that binder is applied and drys, you can putty coat over the wallpaper then texture.

In your present case, try cutting out the blisters, then cost with the bonder, then putty coat, then texture, then primer and paint. --23.121.xx.xxx

I have been there before. We had ceilings in a SFH covered with a textured paper and we tried to paint over it. The paper bubbled and then began separating and falling down. A real mess to deal with. --216.23.xxx.xx

How did he ever think that skim coat plaster would stick to wallpaper? So the texture is not enough to cover the bubbles would be problem one. I think problem two would be when the plaster dries and falls off the wall because it is not bonding with wallpaper underneath. Depending how old the wallpaper was it could actually be strippable with just a wet sponge. Too bad. Sounds like the whole mess has to come off or do they make decent paneling these days? --73.248.xxx.xxx

First of all, you cannot skim coat with plaster. Do you mean skim coat with spackle?

To go over wallpaper you have to seal it first with an oil based paint. Even then, you have to use a short knap roller cover and not soak the paper. After two coats of oil based primer-sealer you can paint it or spackle it however you want.

Why in the world would you use texture paint in a kitchen??!! It cannot be wiped down at all; the texture grabs dust and grease. --70.90.xx.xxx

I hate wallpaper, hate it with a passion. I have removed way too much of the stuff. Older, newer, plastic coated, paper thin. All kinds. I will NEVER install wallpaper because of all I have removed. Gave my self tennis elbow inflammation one time I removed some.

Probably worse than trying to remove plain wallpaper is wallpaper with spackle over it. But that still isn't as bad as wallpaper with semigloss paint over it. (I gave up on that one.) I certainly feel for you. --108.4.xxx.xx

If you have old plaster over lathe walls it is best to leave the wallpaper. Many times the plaster is all cracked to the point of crumbling and the paper is holding it together. --73.141.xxx.xx

Go over it w 1/4" drywall. Loosen the baseboard so it slips behind it. I hung paintable wallpaper over old skinny plaster once and it was not worth it. --66.87.xxx.xxx
