Anybody have any rules of thumb on how much you should expect to pay a drywaller to do a job?

I have two full rooms and ceilings to do. both rooms maybe about 10x16 each and a couple of closets. --24.20.xxx.xxx

We've found it's not the hanging - it's the finish. Last guy we hired did a HORRIBLE job at mudding and finishing...but he was cheaper... --50.82.xxx.xx

My rule of thumb is whatever my local market demands. I get 2-3 quotes and pick from there. Perhaps use again in future. --166.137.xxx.xx

Cost of materials -

Drywall sheets 8 feet 4 feet depending on type and thickness should be about $8-12 a sheet.

Nails, screws, tape, mud, should be about $2-3 per sheet.

Stocking drywall in house about $1 per sheet.

Hanging drywall, per sheet, 8 foot ceilings about $5-10 per sheet. Higher ceilings might cost a bit more.

Scrapping and removal of scrap about $1 a sheet. Not including dump fees.

Taping and finish about $6-10 per sheet for taping and 2 coats plus sand and touch up. If you want smoothwall, which means flat and no texture, it's more. Maybe 50 percent more for finish labor.

Texture about $3-5 per sheet.

This does not count insurance, workers comp, overhead or profit for a contractor but rather materials are at cost from a supplier and labor is for the workers wages. If you are in a high cost area, prices for everything could be higher.

If you are paying a contractor all-in, labor and materials, then there's no point in trying to figure out his "costs." The invisible hand of the free market does all that work for you. You merely have to get multiple quotes to determine who does it the cheapest --199.247.xx.xx

Thanks for the replies, especially Richard's detailed accounting. I have it demod already.

And I have the supplies on hand. Just looking for hanging and taping. I have a couple of bids coming up today and tomorrow. I was just wondering what I might expect. --172.56.xx.xx

Hanging, taping, mudding, sanding - these are all piece jobs. Get bids, work a deal if you can, after you've seen the sub's references.

Paying less for a bad job is never a bargain. --99.59.x.xxx

When I couldn't get on a full company schedule I had to hire a hanger and they referred me to a taper, I humped in the materials with my guy, that part sucked. It all came out close to the full company bids anyway. Hard part was getting them to take checks. --99.203.xx.xx

You don't want the cheapest when it comes to drywall. You also want to make sure your hanger knows how to tape. If he can't tape, then he can't hang properly.

There's more to it than just cutting out boxes and screwing boards to the wall. --50.107.xxx.xx

I get a kick out of David philosophy. I'd love to see his numbers after a full gut remodel is finished. Bad idea in most cases. Unless that philosophy is applied very conservatively when absolutely needed and all else is DIY, it's a good way to go broke on any project REAL FAST. --50.107.xxx.xx

JB,

I estimate $500 per room for labor and materials.

Use ONE contractor to hang AND finish or each will blame the other for lumps.

I also pay them to roll a promer coat because THAT is when you’ll see if it is smooth.

I also go in at night and lay a flashlight on the walls to look for bumps before approving for primer. Mark problems with a PENCIL held flat. Makes a huge difference.
