Heating Noise Help - My rental (1960's ranch FHA/Gas) heating system makes a loud bang when the system kicks on. It seems to be coming from the duct work towards the end of the heat duct line (not at the furnace). What could this be and how do I fix it. The new tenant can't sleep. Thanks --47.14.xx.xxx

I hear that same noise in my 1960's ranch HVAC system. I 'think' the noise comes from the heat exchanger when it first senses natural gas being ignited. I would not worry about it though,...it does let you know the system has "kicked-on" and heat will be coming through the duct work momentarily. --68.63.xxx.xxx

You might be getting gas build up in the unit and then it ignites and that explains the banging noise. I would have a service company take a look at the unit. --173.216.xxx.xxx

I have a similar FHA/gas furnace. I heard a bang noise when the heat kicked on. I found out the noise is coming from the vent control plate behind the vent opening in one o the bedrooms. The plate controls the angle of opening of the vent.

The plate angle is controlled by a handle which was a little loose. So when the hot air hit the plate, it hit the vent frame making a loud noise.

After tightening the handle, the noise was gone and I was able to sleep better. --96.248.xx.xxx

Some good ideas - I'll see if any of these suggestions work.

I have a plumber that said he does HVAC - gas but would I use him or should I use someone that just does HVAC? --47.14.xx.xxx

Usually a plumber that doesn’t do HVAC is just as likely to not do HVAC because they don’t want to (working in January and February cold snaps in dark basements for 24 hours or more at a time) as because they are unknowledgeable. Ask him how much HVAC he does. You might be surprised. A lot of the independent plumbers around here only do plumbing because they don’t WANT to do HVAC. --70.16.xxx.xxx

You are in the realm of what is called the danger door. Do I want to know whats behind the door or take a chance of loss of life.

These type issues call for a "competent" HVAC person not speculation. If this post was to aggressive sorry but some safety issues need YOUR IMMEDIATE attention not a post here???? --216.130.xx.xxx

UPDATE - My HVAC guy said the furnace is not original - whoever replaced the furnace installed a unit WAY too big for the original duct work. He was able to lower the fan and install a hole in the return duct to help reduce the amount of air that was forced into the ductwork.

Thank You ALL for your help. :) --47.14.xx.xxx
