I had an applicant once that asked about having a ball python. I did some research, including asking here. Then, somebody here on Mr LL suggested i call my insurance company and ask them. GOOD IDEA! I did that, and they said that it would not be covered - it is proscribed in their policies. So I told the guy and he moved on to another place. I had decided (after reading all the opinions here) that I really didn't want the snake anyway, but the insurance company was the clincher.
I don't recall any of the specific reasons that people gave for not taking a snake (it saw several years ago), but you could probably find them if you did a search far enough back. I just remember being glad that the guy was moving on and I didn't have to make a choice between taking his money and not taking his python.

I would, unless they had very small children. Then, I have to question judgement, those two don’t go together, in my way of thinking. Of course, I wouldn’t tell them that.
However, they might start breeding mice to feed the snake. That could be a problem. I had one applicant want to know if he could raise snakes, he made good money raising them for sale to pet stores I think it was corn snakes, which are small, very docile. Unfortunately for him and me, I accepted the applicant just ahead of him. Then my house became stupid house. Would have rather had the snakes.

Thanks for the advise. I did not consider contacting my insurance agent. As it so happens, they do have small children. I was concerned about what they might be feeding the snake, (mice or rats) and that they might escape and become a problem. I have found in the past with renters and pets you cannot assume anything. They will all say it always stays in the cage or the house or whatever and there won't be any issues. --73.64.xxx.xxx |

No. Pythons specifically can kill a child. All snakes prefer live food like mice, crickets. Which means you will also have a plague of mice or crickets in your building. If the python gets large enough it can kill an adult. They get out of their enclosures. I would also be concerned about the mental state of someone who likes to watch a snake swallow a small screaming animal. People who have them also have been known to adopt puppies and kittens to feed their larger snakes. There are always warnings on Craig's List about charging for pup or kittens and the occasional photo of someone who has done such things with a warning not to sell them any small animals. --73.248.xxx.xxx |

hollis, thanks for sharing that scary story. I once knew a tenant who was a rather wayward Stanford student. Her snake-caring skills were off, and her baby Boa Constrictor soon "escaped." No one knew where the snake ended up, and it might still be slithering around near Downtown Menlo Park or Atherton. --67.170.xxx.xxx |
