- voice message that I can access online

- solution for when i travel abroad and on cruises

I have Ooma and magicJack. There's also Vonage and some others.

Ported my longtime Verizon landline phone number to Ooma and use magicJack for dedicated fax line.

They are known as VOIP (voice over internet protocol) or internet based services as opposed to cellular or a "pair of wires" such as typical landlines.

Some cable TV companies offer similar VOIP phone services with their bundles.

The two I mentioned have apps for smartphones and/or tablets and require wifi internet to work on your device.

Both services have a small plug-in device for your home that require Ethernet (direct internet connect to modem). This is the VOIP alternative to the traditional 2 wire landlines around longer than us. Your landline plugs into the home-wired device. These plug-in devices CAN be disconnected after setup WITHOUT affecting your smart device apps.

When we went to Italy 2 years ago, we used our smartphone w/Ooma app as our travel phone. My wireless plan (T-Mobile) included Italy's Vodaphone wifi. While in Italy we could send and receive calls from the US without charge, and paid a nominal per minute (0.15/m) to make outgoing calls locally in Italy.

Using my actual celphone number in Italy was a lot more costly.

Start by talking to your wireless provider for wifi where you travel. Then shop the VOIP companies and be sure to let them know where you're traveling to. Good luck.

Pohove is my chronic Mrlandlord misspelling syndrome. What I meant was "phone".

I have Google voice. These are my issues:

- seems when I am out of the country Google voice does not take messages when my phone is off

- Even though I tell folks to call me on my google voice number, when i call them on my cell phone, they start calling me on my cell phone number because that is the number that shows up on their phone. So again when I am out of the county I miss messages.

I am out of the country about 3 + months a year, time broken up 2+ week vacations. --108.51.xxx.xxx

Also when I am overseas I only have wifi in the hotel & I want the phone off. Because of the difference in timezones I don't necessarily want the phone to ring when I am in the hotel.

Also I don't want to get roaming charges when I am abroad by using my carrier services. --108.51.xxx.xxx

re: the wrong number showing, you'll need to download the GV app. Then, when you dial your cellphone, you'll have the option to make the call through your GV number or through your primary number.

GV ought to be connected to your email account. Presuming you have a smartphone, you should be getting your emails forwarded to your phone. So you have two places to check your GV voicemails and texts: through the GV app, and again through your email.

But if you want to have your phone off on purpose, how do you expect to get any messages at all? Do you spend that much time overseas? More than a month? More than two months? More than three months?

I know some people, to avoid international roaming charges from their carrier, will buy a temporary prepaid phone at their destination and use that. So if you're elsewhere, you can find some sort of prepaid no-contract smartphone, and route your email through it. That will keep you in the loop without the excessive charges that you'd get if you'd used your primary phone, although you'd be limited to typed communication. Although if you were going to be there for an extended period of time, it might be worth the hassle to remove your GV number from your real phone number, temporarily attach it to your temporary number, and then put it back to normal when you get back home. --96.46.xxx.xx

Thanks for the info. yes, I do spend about 3+ months a year traveling most of it abroad. But not all at one time. Lots of it is also on cruse ships, where wifi reception can be spotty. I have someone at home tenants can call for emergencies). . But I just plain miss lots of calls when I am away. --108.51.xxx.xxx

Laura -

Look into project Fi. I use it and travel a lot as well. It works in most countries and while it is not free or unlimited the cost is reasonable..

You'll still miss a call occasionally. International phone service that costs a meal a month doesn't get 5 9's of reliability, or even 4. --62.216.xxx.xx
