Apparently some water got behind some bricks on 3rd floor at an apt house I have,..about 20 bricks came down and tenants are worried that more will come down and hurt them , Its where they can walk on driveway.
Need to get a cherry picker and find out how water is getting behind that area but can one put up bricks in cold weather when temps will freeze at night,..is there a special fast setting mortar that can be used?

there is antifreeze that can be put into concrete, so I imagine it could be put into mortar as well. How far upstate are you? Remember, if the heat is on in the building and also if it is above freezing all day, the bricks will absorb heat and will not "flash freeze" as soon as the air temp drops below freezing. --73.141.xxx.xxx |

When we have to do exterior masonry work in the winter we tent the area, use propane heaters to warm the materials & the work space. When we finish for the day we use special thermal concrete curing blankets to cover the work. These help hold the heat in overnight. You can get these at masonry supply houses or on line. I've never used them but I know they also make a curing blanket that has built in electric heat.
In your case if water gets behind the brick & freezes you could end up losing huge sections of brick. If it's not practical to do the repairs this winter you could possible seal the water's access point & have safety netting secured over the brick. You could also use walk thru pipe staging to protect the walk area. --96.237.xx.xx |

What generally happens is there is small leak where between the mortar where water leaks in then freezes cracking brick then bricks fall out. If tuck pointing is done every year then this become a problem. Rented a scissors lift to repair balconies where operation is very complicated as the lift must be perfectly level along with controls. In Ontario one must take a government course then have a safety harness attached to the scissors lift. Another option but more expensive once the bricks are fixed is to install insulation and metal siding which is going to isolate the bricks. A hammer drill along with special mortar tools is required. Since going up it is better to tuck point any areas to avoid future problems. Check out videos on You tube about tuck pointing and lifts. --147.194.xxx.xx |
