I've only ever used the pre-mixed mud that you have to wait 24 hours between each sanding/remud. I've gotten pretty good at it but to do four coats is a lot of waiting time with pre-mixed.

Are the quicker drying muds that you have to mix with water harder to use? Is there a learning curve?

I'm not talking about hanging a new wall, just repairs that are a couple square feet or less. Thanks.

Add heat and fans. Your inside corners will take the longest. You could use 90 minute mud on the tape and first coats. --174.201.x.xxx

I use both types of mud. 20 minute quick set is my personal favorite, however, it only dries in 20 minutes if you spread it on thin. Thick coats can take hours to dry down. Plus, quick set mud dries hard as a rock and it is more difficult to sand,...I use an electric palm sander which makes it a little easier. Both types of mud produce a ton of dust though.

Also, I use 20 minute quick set mud to fill bullet holes in metal doors, holes made by rats/mice and many other types of holes other than just drywall. --68.63.xxx.xxx

If you're already good with the pre-mix, then you'll do well with the quick set. Just try to limit the amount of sanding you'll need to do. Start with the 45 minute mud to test the waters. --65.118.xx.xxx

I'm a "moderate" drywall user...not a pro.

I like the mix up type because you don't need to keep a huge bucket of the pre-mix around...I can mix up tiny batches as needed. It's easy to mix.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems that when I use the really fast drying stuff it gets brittle and cracks easier...so the fastest set time I'll usually use is 45 minute. If one of the pros on here thinks I'm doing something wrong that's making it brittle, please educate me.

I do agree with some above that say 3 thin coats will dry faster than 1 really thick coat...always go thin unless you can afford to let it sit for a LONG time. --99.92.xxx.xxx

Hoosier,

Instead of paper tape, use the fiberglass mesh tape. Mesh tape will not crack and will provide a much stronger joint than paper tape,...just based on my own expereinces. --68.63.xxx.xxx

NE,

Yes, the pros prefer the paper tape but I would guess that is because it is cheap compared to the more expensive mesh tape. Mesh tape reinforces the dried joint compound (like rebar in concrete does) but it does cost more per foot. --68.63.xxx.xxx

Roy, try using Fiberfuse tape. It works great every where except inside corners. For ISCs we use paper tape. --96.237.xx.xx

Not because it's cheap. It works in the tools that pros use, plus the mesh causes speed bumps when the spackle that pushes through dries.

A bazooka is one of the tools, also the spool that hangs on your hip.

If there's one aspect of remodeling I can do proficiently, it's spackling. I would not use mesh. Ever.

You can use it all you want. The main reason newbies use it is because it sticks to the wall and they don't have the skills to get the mud out from underneath the paper after the paper is applied. --50.107.xxx.xx

Watched my sheetrock pro use 5 minute mud earlier this week. Very impressive!

What Roy said: use it for base coats, keep it thin, and make sure you never have to sand it!

I'd be OK with a small batch of 20 minute for a hole patch. My pro burned through a full pan of 5 minute in 2.5 minutes, washed out his pan, and mixed a top coat by the 6 minute mark. He definitely earned his money. --173.233.xxx.xxx

For normal rental wall repair-- after tenant moves out. Regular mud for nail holes etc. We now put round disks where door knobs hit wall so those repairs are history. Should a large repair be needed and you want to paint right away just skip that area till next day. After mudding -- with regular stuff and just prior to painting-- just wash the wall gently it will smooth out the mud patch. (no sanding)

FYI on size of container. If your only doing a few fixes-- don't try to buy the big 5 gal mud bucket. We have found the STINK when the mud sits unused is horrendous. We use the 1 gal buckets and it keeps the mud fresh.

in a pinch you can use white toothpaste, little dab will do ya! --99.103.xxx.xxx

As a contractor, I had to learn ways to limit the time applying mud to drywall installs.

First rule, thin coats to limit sanding. I use sanding machines with vacuum attachments to limit dust to a minimum. Sometimes I often use a wet sanding sponge to smooth out a troubled area.

I'll fill in deep openings with a quick drying compound then sand and mud over it for uniform drying. That's day one. Day two with wider trowels I'll add a second coat of mud, again thin so it drys quickly.

Day three I'll put on the top coat. Day 4 using a fine sand paper I'll give everything a thin sanding. Then vacuum up the surface to remove any dust before applying drywall primer. --47.156.xx.xx

I tried the paper tape years ago when I did my first repair and I hated it because it bunched up or got messed up when I put it on, so I've been using the mesh tape.

I haven't noticed any bumps caused by the mesh in the small jobs that I've done with it...is this something that happens over time? --72.188.xxx.xxx

Here's what helped me graduate to being able to use the quicker-setting compounds successfully:

Bought a second hand smallish stainless steel rounded-bottom mixing bowl and spatula from Goodwill. This makes it easy, tidy, and quick to mix up the desired amount.

Transfer mixed compound to the rectangular pan and IMMEDIATELY and quickly clean out the mixing bowl and spatula outside with the hose (NOT in the sink!). This leaves the mixing bowl and spatula clean and ready for the next round.

Still enough time left to work the compound onto the repair area.

Also, some cardboard on the floor below the repair area will make cleanup go faster.

The faster setting powders make it possible for several coats in a day. --174.21.xxx.xxx

One secret to getting great drywall compound is to use an electric mixer and get your joint compound 'nice and creamy' (similar to toothpaste) before you spread it. Adding a little water helps too. Stirring with a stick it is not enough,...it needs to be mixed with an electric drill with a steel drywall paddle attached to it. --68.63.xxx.xxx
