Insulating the attic? Walls? Both?

I've done attics myself several times...pretty easy...but walls are a bit more tricky if the drywall and siding are installed.

Make sure if it's an old house you leave enough ventilation...old houses need to breathe...which they did well when first built but if you close them up too tightly you'll have issues like mold and sweaty windows. --99.92.xxx.xxx

I was going to look into foam insulation and then found out it can move wires when it expands. --73.248.xxx.xxx

-Hoosier they insulated basement, 1st and 2nd floor, pending for the attic. They drilled holes outside the house, i say each feet, a small hole, filled with recycle papers and blow in by an air pressure machine, they were here Thurs and Fri, i started to feel the difference today, the weather is around 30 degrees, my wife used to have the thermostat on 74/75, now i have it on 69 and it feels warm, let's see under more temps. Oh and the material has a chemical that prevents the mice, bugs and those things.

Yes my house is old 1890.

-AllyM the company that did the job used something else, they said they have been using this method for around 10 - 15 years, and last longer than the foam insulation (for the inside walls).

-Hollis i applied to a program in my stated called MassSave, they are ink with the gas/electric companies, they send an inspector/engineering to asses the house, do the all calculations, after they leave me the contracts, they cover more than 75%. Infrared scan? --73.159.xxx.xxx

LordZen, what did they use for the basement ceiling and how did they seal / insulate around the perimeter where the wood framing meets the foundation? --96.237.xx.xx

-Steve let me see if i can explain this properly: they didn't insulate the basement ceiling, but they did all around the top corners where the house joint with the basement, they had a big pack of hard sponge, cut them in pieces and place one between the corner ceiling, then covering with the foam than comes in something like a small gas tank, the crawlspace they also put like a special plastic sheet, then sealed with foam and gray/silver tape.

i don't know if this answer your question.

They haven't finish yet, they have to do the attic and change my thermostats for the Nest E.

Can i post links with pictures here? --73.159.xxx.xxx

LordZen, sounds like they are doing a good job by both insulating & draft stopping the band joist area of the basement. Did they say why they're not insulating the basement ceiling? --96.237.xx.xx
