Recently purchased a multi that came with inherited tenants. Two long time tenants are great. The other's, as it turned out are known (to police) drug dealers. I put up cameras and saw backpacks in and out all hours of day and night.
So, couple months later... Evicted and I have possession of the unit. As you can imagine they were not nice to me and left me with some work to do. I did find powder spilled on the floor. Has anyone come across this before? How do I go about testing?
Any suggestions appreciated. --50.235.xxx.xx |

There is a recovery group I think in Somersworth, NH that was recently in the Fosters Daily Democrat about giving away test strips. The addicts could take there drugs, mix with water, put a test strip in and test for fentanyl. I was thinking those would be good for landlords to test powders. During clean out for my summer eviction we could white powder on the bed and assumed it was diatomaceous earth. Then found a plate with cut straws, plastic razor blades, powder and pills under the bed. I was in move out mode and should not have moved anything. We were lucky because it was anti anxiety meds he was snorting and the amount of white powder on the bed frame probably was diatomaceous earth. The police wanted me to call a crime scene clean up group or possibly serve pro. My moving help had already touched things so we knew we were luckily safe. Try calling police, fire, ems or recovery group for suggestions. Good luck and stay safe! --107.77.xxx.xx |

Also, if you determine it is safe for you or someone you know that will be cleaning. Where heavy duty gloves to protect from a needle stick and be careful of kneeling on the floor due to possible needles. --107.77.xxx.xx |

Heavy gloves. Mask
Vacuum like crazy - use a Shop Vac with a good filter to keep all the powder out of the air. --131.151.xx.xx |

Fentanyl will kill you quick, even a small spot of it. I mean almost microscopic spot. If you at all believe it would be Fentanyl, I would call the police for help.
(I've just been through some seminars about this, you can't fool around with that stuff.) --50.82.xxx.xx |

We are warned by the local police officer at our local landlord meetings not to touch powder. If it is carte fentanyl and touches your skin you can end up in an overdose situation. Our local police, fire and ems groups have had to change their protocols to protect themselves. I was stupid but lucky this summer. Delaying clean up to figure out you will be safe and alive is worth the delay. Unfortunately addiction, heroin, and meth are rampant in our area. --107.77.xxx.xx |

If it was drugs of any value, Addicts would've scraped it up off of the floor. They're not just gonna leave it there.
You may find empty syringe s and used pipes and stuff like that, but you're not gonna find a bag of goods. Highly unlikely.
I'd have it cleaned up and would be painting by now. --174.201.x.xxx |

Multiple pounds of this stuff are coming across the southern border from China a Mexico. News said it was enough to overdose every man woman and child in the USA. Act of War according to my thinking. And yet a judge says, come on in... --73.178.xxx.xx |

NE, we have a huge Fentanyl problem here on the beach, and yes, the powder has been found laying about. Those of us who go to call on people who might be involved with drugs are urged to watch out for it - cops carry overdose kits for themselves now, and we have been urged to get our own (although my case is not a drug case, so I haven't bothered yet.) But it's a very real issue. --50.82.xxx.xx |

Me: Rubber gloves, wipe it up with damp paper towels, followed by more paper towels with Fantastic or other spray cleaner. No testing, no precautions beyond the rubber gloves. OK, a mask to avoid inhalation.
Then, mop the whole place and be done.

WMH, I'm not saying it's not a huge problem, it in fact is. I'm just saying I'm not going to worry about it. I'm cleaning it up and the last thing I want are the cops in my units running tests. --174.201.x.xxx |

Okay, So what I hear so far is a lot of hysteria around fentanyl, like there was around bed bugs. That it needs to enter the blood stream to be harmful. That can come about from blowing out the back of a traditional shop vac. A HEPA vac might me more suitable.
I also found the test strips are now that easy to find. I found some similar strips for urine on ebay. Not sure if the work the same.
Personally, I'd like to know what I'm dealing with. Especially if I have people helping/ working or living in the unit. But I do agree it can be cleaned up in-house. --50.235.xxx.xx |

We had a 'Squatter's' house across the street for 3 years before we got rid of them (managed a police raid). The police called in HAZMAT who tested everything inside and out including the air in, around, and under the house. They took care of everything and disposed of tons of contaminated material.
Dunno if you have a Hazardous Materials Division working for your local county, but they would handle all the safety stuff for you. Better to be safe than to risk your health. --174.66.xxx.xxx |

I don't trust the local ServePro and the like.
I do know that we have a drug problem - who doesn't?
So, yeah, damp paper towels. Wear a mask, gloves, long sleeves.
The idea of getting an accidental OD kit is probably a good one. --131.151.xx.xx |

Be careful with using the city/county services. Most public entities have started back charging for their services. You could wind up with a bill for thousands/tens of thousands of dollars and not even realize it until it is too late.
I'm more with NE and Mike45 on this point. Rubber gloves and a dust mask, some wet paper towel to start. Followed up with a good scrubbing with a pail of water/cleaner would be the extent of my activities. Don't jump to conclusions on what it is, but be safe in cleaning it up with procedures equal to what is used in the emergency room at the hospital. --50.26.xx.xxx |

Yeah, call the police, right, you want to give the local DA as much ammo as possible to seize your house as a civil forfeiture. Just put on protective gloves and clean it up. --70.90.xx.xxx |
