My tenant of 6 years told me yesterday that she doesn’t have good water pressure in her shower (this is the only bathroom). My first thought was maybe she needs to soak the showerhead in vinegar. She said it’s the bathtub faucet too and as she turns the water on the pipes rattle or make a weird noise when it’s turned on all the way. If water is turned on only Halfway the noise stops. She sent a video to me last night and said it’s been like this for a month. (First she’s telling me though) we had converted her claw foot to a regular tub and shower thanksgiving of 2016. Any thoughts of what would cause this noise in the pipes. I am planning on calling a plumber ASAP Monday morning.

It could be that the pipes didn't have adequate support clips installed which is allowing the pipes to move. Are the pipes, copper or Pex? It could also be that a washer from one of the shutoff valves or part of the shower / tub valve is loose. Does the noise happen only when the tub is used or does it also happen when the toilet or sink are used? --96.237.xx.xx

I had some old faucets/shutoffs do that.. except it happens when I open or close half way, never bothered to fix it since it is temporary..

Fastening the pipes definitely help.. I suspect its one of the faucets/valves.. --71.232.xxx.xxx

Metal pipes have to be strapped and secured to the house framing to avoid movement.

low pressure can be checked: remove the shower head and run the water - how's the pressure?

Is the bathroom the only place where this noise occurs? How about the toilet and sink? --99.59.x.xxx

They are pex pipes. Noise only when shower or tub is ran not toilet or bathroom sink. My renters soaked the shower head in vinegar and said still same low water pressure today. Sounds like good possibility of something loose or no support clips. Not sure why the low water pressure though. They are off to church now so I don’t know if still same pressure with shower head off. In video they showed low pressure from tub faucet not shower head. --173.26.xx.xxx

What brand & type of control valve is it? It could be an issue with the internal diverter. --96.237.xx.xx

I have no idea Steve and I doubt my husband will remember even though he installed everything. He can’t even remember when I tell him I have an appointment the next day. --173.26.xx.xxx

Both hot and cold sides equally? If only one, might be some grit or similar at the valve, partially blocking the passageway.

Take the valve apart and flush it. --174.21.xxx.xxx

While checking the tub / shower faucet and flushing the faucet check the flow of the sink as well while you are there just to make sure it does not need flushed. Since you will have the faucets apart replace the stems and or value washers and seats.

Also check the hot water heater to make sure debri is not coming from the hot water heater. If you have access to the water lines in the basement check to make sure they are secure against the studs and not loose.

Has the whole line been replaced with PEX or is it connected to old iron pipe upstream? Iron tends to rust the pipe closed on the inside causing slow flow. --50.26.xx.xxx

This can happen to many faucets if some small soldering particles have gone up to the faucet, the particles are stuck, turn off water pressure - remove valve body - hold a coffee cup over the body the valve came out of - turn on and off water a few time to flush out - reinsert cartridge and retest - the cartridge may have stuff stuck inside and you can only replace it. --76.188.xxx.xx

Pipes rattling for me is usually a bad toilet float. I had one where a person would take a shower/use the sink, it caused it rattle. I would check there first and then see if your main line is partially plugged. --66.170.xx.xxx

Well a week later the plumber finally came. Ended up being blockage in the pipes on the hot water side. Plumber said from the galvanized pipes. It was causing the noise and the low water pressure. --173.26.xx.xxx
