I know we occasionally get questions asking, "If I don't screen for credit/criminal/whatever, why do I need their SSN/DOB?"
I filed an eviction today. One of the things my JP Court requires is for me to prove that the people I'm evicting aren't in the military. It's not enough to say, "No, he works for Walmart and she works for McDonald's," but I have to actually get on the military's website, feed in their SSNs, DOBs, and surnames for all adults, and print out the resulting piece of paper that says, "No, they're not in the armed forces."
So-- it's not really anything any of us are in the habit of doing-- I think this is my second eviction since 2010-- but it was definitely a handy piece of information to have in the file.

Oh can you imagine trying to get info from a tenant as they are trying to sneak away, Just a minute Johnand Judy - I need you SSN numbers - why? - I have to have them to collect a garnishment against you, the court has to have these numbers also. Because of the high number of Hispanics in my immediate area (San Antonio) the SSN is often the only way to tell the multiples of exact names apart. Can you imagine trying to find a particular Juan Martinez or Jose Gonzales without a distinguishing SSN?? There are thousands, and some names run in families, so there is someone of that name in each generation. AND, all of them may have lived at the same address at one time or another. Differing SSNs were the only thing that helped me. Back when I started there wasn't a lot of info on line. I took copies of drivers licenses, and home phones (before cell phones). --108.87.xx.xxx |
