i live a small market. there is one of each: HD,Lowes, & Menards. With menards normally doubling the sales of the other two combined. but last night i walked out of Lowes with some great deals, the manager kept marking stuff down for me, and instead of all the employees running and hiding, i even had an employee escort me around the store helping me pick and then load osb, windows, and a door. something must be going on at corporate?

The Lowes near me is always very friendly-- the prices are usually within reasonable distance of each other between HD, Lowes, and Sutherlands-- but Lowes offers free delivery on appliances (HD offers free delivery only on appliances worth more than $x) and is much better about helping me load big, awkward stuff into my cart and is quick to offer load-out assistance and help with tie-down. HD is very competent about loading help as well, but requires a bit more lying-in-wait-and-snaring-assistance. Sutherlands is very helpful at helping you pick stuff out, but load-out help (and whether it extends to messing with my tie-downs, which are the easy kind with the button release) generally tends to depend on the charitable feelings of the individual, rather than a store-wide policy. --96.46.xxx.xx

Closing three stores near me. Suppose there is a shift in their business and they are positioning themselves to ride it out. Didn't they buy Craftsman tools? I see them in Lowes stores now. Menards is getting more of my business. I like Lowes for finishing projects and Home Depot for more construction projects. Merards for odd and unusual projects on all levels of projects. I like their 11% off days. And i dont like Lowes coupons they print off for furure discounts. If you are going to appreciate my retail business show me now... who know where I'll be next week ... see me today, value my business today. I need that water heater now not during the next promotional coupon dates. I just find that offer very frustrating! --99.203.xx.xx

I use Lowe’s almost exclusively. I am in the same market as Plenty. As mentioned 3 stores closing in the same area. All within 10 miles of each other. They have started marking things down and can’t wait to stock the garage with discounted items.

That being said they have a new CEO. They closed their Orchard Supply stores back in August. The 3 stores closed here are part of 31 being closed across US and Canada. That being said they have been struggling and part of the restructuring was to get rid of slow moving inventory. Back in September they had several aisles of clearance items that was all the slow moving stuff they were getting off of their shelves. Take advantage of the deals while they last. --75.50.xxx.xx

I don't think I've ever had a bad experience at Lowes.

My first bad experience at Home Depot was when the kitchen department insisted I make an appointment to find out the price of a sink. Appointments were 2 weeks out. Went straight to the service desk and insisted on speaking to the manager. Made the complaint and he got me the price. Bought the sink from him.

Another was when an employee told me he had a bottle of wine in his truck and said we could have a drink after he was off work. I declined - and didn't complain to the manager. I was too freaked out. Didn't return for some time in order to avoid that guy.

Last time was in the last couple months. Needed new garage doors. Chose HD as it had a brand I wanted. Didn't want to deal with screening independent contractors, so got their install service. Their subcontractor told me I had to get the permit from Boston. Turns out the subcontractor doesn't let their customers see their license, but Boston requires the person requesting the permit to submit a copy of the license via Boston's procedure. Subcontractor said they'd email a copy of the license to the Boston inspector (and not cc me). That is not Boston's procedure.

The Boston inspector told me that since a copy of the license wasn't submitted (not following the procedure equals not submitted), I would have to sign a statement acknowledging that I was using an unlicensed contractor. This would be put on line for all to see - including tenants and their attorneys.

During all this, HD was calling me regularly to get me to approve the final order. Told them what was going on and asked for help. They said there was nothing they could do, but kept calling me to place the order. I called the store manager to get them to stop calling me as I wouldn't place the order until I got the permit. He said his employees were just doing their jobs and they were right that HD couldn't do anything about the subcontractor.

So, of course, I cancelled the whole thing.

Pičce de résistance, got a voice mail from the same HD store manager a couple of weeks ago. He said HD couldn't tell from their records whether or not I got the range I ordered from them. Could I call him back? Yes I got the range. No I didn't call him back.

Have other stories, but those are the "good" ones. I am so relieved that the Lowes near me is not closing and pray that it never does. Or at least as long as I own this house. --209.6.xxx.xxx

I used to love my local Lowes for their selection of vinyl trim products. I would get delivery the next day. However, they recently changed and they are splitting up orders like Menard's and referring me to a store that has what I want in inventory, but that is not how it works. They started referring me to a store that has some of my order and cancelling the rest of the order without notice. A computer glitch I guess. My last two orders from Lowes have been a total mess taking over 6 weeks while I go to Menard's to buy it all because I won't wait that long. --216.23.xxx.xx

Rain here has killed business for the local True Value hardware. This morning the had the heat off at 46 degrees. Must be the same for Lowes. It's solar minimum so expect cooler wetter weather for the next five years. --73.178.xxx.xx

Lowes will be closing stores which are not as profitable as other stores. Lowes came here very late where most of the stores are located in larger urban areas. Lowes took over Rona stores which will probably close down a lot of those stores as well. Where the Rona stores are smaller operate more in smaller towns as well as the larger urban areas. --147.194.xxx.xx

My Lowes store went from 27 sales associates on the floor down to 7. Just a few weeks ago they changed to aggressive markdowns on scratch and dent, cash & carry no delivery.

Their delivery is 2 weeks out.

We only have Lowes, the next city over has several HDs and Lowes.

Since they have no competition here, our local Lowes gives very poor service. It's been that way for years. I can go to the Lowes 40 miles away and get GREAT service...cause it's two blocks from an HD.

Just yesterday I bought vertical blinds from Lowes, their own Project Source brand. It had 21 vanes in the pack, but required 25. I went back and talked to a sales person (who was actually helpful and responsive!). She said they don't sell those vanes separately. I told her I was buying another blind, removing the 4 vanes, and returning it. She said that was a great idea. LOL

I did mark the return with a sharpie "not enough vanes" --173.233.xxx.xxx

Considering that construction and remodeling is booming in this strong economy, I can't imagine how anything but bad management is plaguing Lowes to close some stores. Maybe they're bracing for what they perceive may be the next market adjustment, but even if the market adjusts, speculation in construction should still stay strong.

I like Lowes for some things, HD for others (but don't get me started on how awful HD's 'rebate' program works). I wish we had Menards out here. --108.201.xx.xx
