I've been using Kilz 2 and I realized by searching the web that many think this stuff is crap.

Do you have a favorite primer brand that you can recommend instead?

Bin Zinnser. Hands down. About $50 a gallon, but covers everything. Spray can is good for quick fixes too. --174.201.xx.x

What is your purpose for priming. If it is for bonding to a shiny/ glossy/ slippery surface, you need a bonding primer. If it is to cover a water stain or knot in the wood or high tannin wood, a shellac or shellac based primer is best. For hiding color, a basic primer, tinted a light to medium grey color or a color close to the final color.

There are primers for new sheetrock, mildew, odors and peeling paint. Oil based, latex and alcohol (shellac). Match the primer to your need. --108.4.xxx.xx

Basic painting we use Gripper. But for tough jobs it's Zinzer Bins. Stuff sticks to EVERYTHING even super shiny paneling. --50.82.xxx.xx

I tried PrimeRX from Sherwin Williams this week. It is a thick, white. glue like product for peeling paint. Sticks everything together and seals it up, dries clear. I thought it worked pretty well. I liked it better then the peel stop from menards. --75.128.xx.xxx

I used to use Gripper. The gray Gripper was especially good at covering knots and stopping them from bleeding thru.

Home Depot stopped carrying the gray Gripper, so I switched to Zinzer Bins. Three reasons:

- it's stickier and penetrates better. When I rolled Gripper on a floor, it sort of sat on top. The Bins soaked right in and bonded better to the floor, sealing it better.

- The dry time is great - about 10 minutes. When priming kitchen cabinets, I'm able to move the doors and drawers around quickly instead of waiting hours.

- better coverage. A gallon seems to cover 2 or 3 times more surface area than Gripper.
