Step 1: Get out & move to a safe location.

Step 2: Get the cops there first, clear the house of all occupants, THEN worry about locking up. The horses had already gotten into the barn at that point. Was the plan to lock him INSIDE the house?

Sid, she was probably in shock and not thinking clearly. This is why I am always harping on training. Victims are usually behind the curve on reaction. If they are not aware of the psychological processes of defense and threats people will often respond in odd manners.

Case in point, many years ago I was the first journalist to arrive at the devastating Laguna Beach fire where 330 homes burned. I followed the first fire truck into a community called Emerald Bay, arriving as the fire had hit the upper street and was coming up a ravine behind a row of homes.

There was a guy literally running in circles in the street. He'd run into his house, then back into the street. I asked if he wanted to throw some stuff in my truck. He said, "There's no time, no time!" Then he jumped in his car and took off, leaving the front door wide open.

A cop showed up and we beat on nearby doors to ensure everyone was out, meanwhile the whole street caught fire. One of my photos was an out of focus shot I took while running backward in front of the cop as about a 100 gal propane tank blew up behind us sending a fireball about 100 feet up. Then I turned around and we both ran for our lives!

I agree she should have called 911 from her car. The lockbox was away from the front door, on the gas meter. Article says the baddie reached out the BEDROOM window.
