So the 1975 brick rancher's smallest bathroom renovation is complete and we have a tenant for October 1st (just can't believe the large number of people we had to sort through who either had cats or dangerous dogs, or were smokers, as well as a couple of people who had felonies). But we found a good tenant at last.

BUT, we are getting this terrible pungent sweet odor coming from the built-in vanity cabinet in the OTHER bathroom. This didn't start until the other renovation was nearly complete. And the renovated bathroom is nowhere near this one and doesn't share plumbing.

We replaced the plumbing under the sink and there's no plumbing issue; we replaced the base inside the cabinet with new wood and shelf liner and checked the subfloor under it, which is also fine, but we sprayed mold armour in there anyway.

Searching online shows that this could be almost anything such as a squirrel nest, rat urine, and on and on it goes. But we haven't found anything. And it doesn't smell like death - we know that odor, but it is an almost nauseating sweet smell. The odor is so strong that I started to feel affected while doing some tasks in there. We have to figure this out before the new tenant takes possession....

When the vanity doors are shut, the odor is excessively strong. (There are four cabinet doors to the open space inside, which just has the new floor base and one shelf above it that goes across the whole thing, which is about about 5 feet wide.) If I leave the four cabinet doors open overnight, the odor dissipates, but whatever it is spreads throughout the house so that I get a sick nauseous feeling even when pretty far away from it.

We'll keep investigating, but has anyone ever run across anything like this? We just need to find the cause and its solution very soon. --71.246.xxx.xx

Is this a newly installed vanity? I have one in my bathroom that I can't close the doors on because of the odor. I assume it is the paint finish used on it or some weird reaction to being boxed up and sitting in a hot warehouse. I left the doors open next to a window for almost a week . I thought the smell was gone until I went away for a few days. It wasn't gone, I had just got used to it. --71.10.xxx.xxx

No, it's a built-in vanity cabinet with walls on each end of it. You couldn't get used to this odor. It is very strong - as strong as a skunk odor, though very different. --71.246.xxx.xx

I had a similar odor which was like a strong brown sugar odor in the room over a garage at one of my buildings. I think that bees had built a nest in the wall and that it was honey inside the wall smelling strong. We had no indication that there were any bees because no one saw any, but that was the only thing we could come up with. It has since gone away. Interesting that you smell it most with the door closed to the vanity. --73.178.xxx.xx

Chris,

My first thought is sewer gas. New drain without enough water in the trap OR

drain not venting properly, maybe blocked.

I had something similar where the mid-50s galvanized steel drain line in the wall from the kitchen sink had corroded enough that it constantly leaked water running down the between the cabinet and wall, then ran along the floor under the glue down tiles which reactivated the glue, making it smell more. That glue smell, mixed with the odor from the constantly wet subfloor was quite a pungent odor!

At least the tiles came up EASY in that part of the floor!

Can you inspect underneath? What kind of drain plumbing material and how old? --174.21.xxx.xxx
