What's a good fan for a basement that stays damp?

Something with a little gusto. Thank you..!!

Why don't you get a dehumidifier with a pump. Sucks the moisture out of the air and pumps it outside. --71.50.xxx.xx

I would have suggested on that is used for radon gas but it doesn't have "gusto". I do think they are made for basement use and vent to the outside. --73.178.xxx.xx

It may end up installing a sump pump to drain water away from the foundation. Insulating all the walls with rigid insulation board will prevent walls from sweating. A fan will probably not solve the problem. View some videos on You Tube about preventing damp basements where may find remedies. --147.194.xxx.xx

A fan moves air around. Unless something removes moisture, the air will remain damp. An exhaust fan will make the basement colder in Winter and hotter in Summer given that any air removed must be replaced-- presumably with outside air. Dehumidifier or air conditioner removes moisture.

How could you fail to reason this out already? --66.226.xx.xxx

Check out Tjernland’s website. It’s a mouthful but they have a variety of solutions. I’ve used a few of their products and am satisfied so far. --73.177.xxx.xx

I've used a verity of fans. A small ...almost desk top looking fan is enough to move the air around.

Moving the air makes a large difference Mildew does not seem to settle/grow/expand/conquer

I've used the fans off of power vented water heaters....too strong. I've used fans from commercial walk-in fridges...much calmer.

I've also used the house central fan and covered the upstairs return air vents allowing only the basement return to be open (* it should be noted that this was a monitored experiment and that you can not restrict air flow in the heat season as the air flow also cools the heat ex changer in the furnace) --108.51.xxx.xxx

Steve,

The exhaust fan in MY bathroom just pulls air from the hall, not from the damp shower at the other end of the room, so we have a $10 Walmart fan pointed into the shower to stir the shower air.

Start with the gutters and downspout extensions, and the slope next to the foundation. LOTS of moisture comes from above.

Then install a dehumidifier with a hose draining into a sump pump or floor drain.

That moisture will make the living level smell musty.

Santa Fe dehumidifier from Therma-Stor Products in Madison Wisconsin. We’ve had ours for many years, still does a great job. Pricey, but our utility bills dropped by a big chunk after we replaced the small dehumidifier with this beast.

Fans also can help move moist air towards a dehumidifier, as Brad mentioned. --70.92.xxx.xxx
