I have an old stone foundation which sticks out of the ground about 2'. Mortar is old and crumbling (not suprising). I need to chip out all the loose mortar and fill back in with new. Which type of mortar do I use? --174.198.x.xx |

It would be really nice if we could post pictures in these discussions. Even if there was a delay for approval. I could screengrab a pic for you and put it here. Quikrete makes it. Yellow and blue bag. --174.201.x.xxx |

I use the green bag mortar at HD or Lowes, by comparison it is like powder sugar where the yellow bag mortar is like table sugar, mix with cool water for a slow set till you get familiar with this project then warm water makes a quicker set, in the wintertime I use really warm water for a faster set so I can get into the hot chocolate inside. --76.188.xxx.xx |

I'd hire an actual mason who knows what kind of mortar to match with old brick. New mortar isn't compatible with old brick in the long term. I know it's a significant issue, trying to repair old chimneys, and running into issues if you use the wrong materials. So I would expect something as structurally important as a foundation to be just as important.
So in this case, I wouldn't DIY or give it to a $10/hr handyguy--- I'd get a real live mason to do it right the first time. --96.46.xxx.xx |

Deanna, I am 100 percent in agreeance with you.
The old mortar was different back when they did that work. You really need to have someone who knows do it. --66.188.xx.xxx |

I agree with Richard and your man,but where the hell do you find a real mason in America unless you go back to Italy or Ireland, where the 20 year olds could do it with their eyes shut.......................charlie............................ --32.214.xxx.xx |

Note that she said Stone, not brick.
Word to those looking at buildings to purchase with rock foundations. Think twice before proceeding I will never buy another building with a rock foundation! I’ve done 40K in repairs on three buildings in 14 years. A section here, a section there, it adds up when they start to cave in!

My mason says M type. Cannot buy at HD or Lowe’s. Need to get at mason store. Also, don’t be afraid to call quikrete or other manufacturers...they are surprisingly helpful. --107.10.x.xxx |

I’ve been doing a lot of research on this lately as I have a similar issue. Do you know what kind of stone it is? If it’s a soft stone, it appears to be best to stick with a lime based mortar, as was originally used. Also stick with a lime based mortar on old bricks. --24.147.xx.xxx |
