What do you typically pay for labor to have a deck installed? I just got a quote for $9,000 to install two decks at a duplex. I'm supplying all materials; they are just there to dig the holes and build. Each deck is 12.5'x13.5' (5.5' off the ground) and attached to the house on one side with one set of stairs (3.5' wide x 7.75' span). Each will require three post holes for the main beam and I believe four post holes for the stairs (still confirming this part with the code book). The frame is all treated with hangers and the top boards (screw through the top) and railing will be composite.
I'm thinking their price is still very high (especially as their first quote was $11k). I know it will vary based on region, but I was in enough shock that I was thinking about just losing my next two weekends and burning the midnight oil during the week to build them....completely against my plan to hire everything out going forward.
What do you think on their price (roughly $23/sqft)? --68.117.x.xx |

That was my thought...they initially said it would take two weeks to build them also...I guess they needed time to take a 6 hour break each day to go with their two hours of work. --68.117.x.xx |

That is ridiculous,i would loose there number, any contractor that lowers there price when questioned might as well just admit they were trying to rip you off, that is also a good way to never get hired by me for a job --72.231.xxx.xxx |

Around here there have been some major shotty deck work with decks giving way so they no long want to repair decks. Everything is replace. I suppose a few contractors have been held liable a and insurance is adding to their cost. --99.203.xx.xxx |

I built a 10x10 deck 4 feet off the ground in a Saturday once. Me and a couple unskilled helpers. Didn't include footings, but included stairs and railings.
So yeah, NE is right, 2-3 days should be plenty for a skilled crew, assuming just standard PT lumber.
Another deck, 660 sf on 3 levels, garapa decking screwed and plugged. Fascia, a pergola, a built-in bench. I think we had a total of 27 footings. That one took me 3 months.... :-) --75.129.xxx.xxx |

What covering do you have so the weather does not ruin the wood, did I miss that part? Just check with a boat owner about varnish and so on with water and wood if you missed that step. --76.188.xxx.xx |

MB,
You are not going to get your answers asking LLs. Call other local deck builders and get more bids to find out.
Time wise, it takes much more than "a Saturday".
When you pour concrete for posts which will carry weight 5'-6' high, you need to wait at least a week, preferable 28 days for the concrete to reach full strength.
Then you have the lumber - the lumber that you provide - do you want an unskilled worker handle it, cut it wrong and toss it?
I am a retired builder, and for the type of deck you are planning, a permit should be pulled out, so you don't end up on the "collapsed deck list". --99.59.x.xxx |

28 days?! I don't know about all that. We've poured in the morning, went to lunch and framed up in the afternoons before. --50.32.xxx.xxx |

NE[PA],
Yes my friend. Concrete reaches full strength in 28 days. Sure you can add additives to speed up the cure time, but it's something I never wanted to do, being old school.
Have you ever seen concrete highways under process, and wondered why the newly poured concrete is just sitting there for weeks, covered with plastics and blankets?
Well, deck posts are not exactly a highway, but they do support weight high off the ground. Better be safe than sorry.
I would never do what you did (poured in the morning and built the deck after lunch), and I bet you built your deck w/o a permit too.
You know, all those stories of decks swaying, separating off the building and collapsing are a warning to all future deck owners: Do it to code.
And as to your remark that you rather go into contracting...you first have to get a few years experience, no matter the trade, under a licensed contractor, then pass a state license test. Go ahead, do it.
contractors earn what the get paid. Heck, even handymen do. Lawyers and congreemen don't. --99.59.x.xxx |

Math is not one of your strongest assets, is it? Kidding aside, I still like some of your postings.
This is about a 170 sf deck, and you are willing to build it for about $500 labor only??!!

I appreciate the responses....I know I was thinking I could fly a few of you in if we wanted to build it over a weekend for what they were charging. I do already have a permit pulled for the project and finished figuring out the rest of the pieces to ensure I'm fully up to code as I don't think all contractors in my area have a clue. I was hoping to start next week, until my jaw dropped with the contractors prices. I told the contractor last night that I could hire an electrician, plumber, and HVAC guy to build the decks together for me for less.
I'm going to call around for a few more quotes, but worst case scenario I'll fill a cooler, light up the grill, and pay a few bucks to my brother in-laws to help get it punched out in a weekend. --68.117.x.xx |
