I rent a 1/2 duplex and the storm blew down the middle fence that separate me and my neighbor. I called and they said there is no permit for any middle fence. The neighbor does not want to contribute anything.

I may just take the cost and get the permit and put up one but I am hearing that if I put up it then I have to put the nice side of the wood panel to the neighbor. Is that true as since I have to pay a lot of $, I would like the nice side.

Thx. --107.72.xxx.xxx

You're a renter, you shouldn't be installing anything on someone else's property. Tell the landlord of the situation. It's their property and their decision what to do about it, if anything at all. --108.69.xxx.xxx

It's true where I live, the nice side to the outside (street or neighbor). You should probably put up a fence that looks good to you on the backside. --207.5.xx.xx

The nice side to others has long been a standard, if you use a shadow box fence both sides are the same, you will have the framing on your side, --76.188.xxx.xx

I assume you are talking about wood fence. Whether the neighbor shares the cost or not, I install one panel (from one post to the next) with the good side in and the next panel with the nice side out. --99.59.x.xxx

Sorry, I mistook your initial sentence. Thought you were the tenant. If you're buying the fence, and own the property, you can pretty much do whatever you want assuming it's a divider in the middle of your property and not a bordering fence.

Thought the standard was nice side facing outside. That's the way HOAs usually specify it. Since this is an inside/inside fence and there is no "outside", not sure that rule really applies in this case.

If it becomes a problem with this tenant, then evict and the next tenant won't even notice it. --108.69.xxx.xxx

I made mistake fixing neighbor's fence once before.

The tenant told me the fence was bad and neighbor complaining. So I just hired a contractor to fix it.

Later, I found the post is on neighbor's side and I do not think the fence is ours.

Are you sure you need a permit for a fence in the first place? We don't unless it's more than 6 feet high. --50.82.xxx.xx

Update

Yes we needed a permit so I pulled one to take ownership and learned a good lesson here with fences. Do it the right way and take the upfront cost rather than patch and end up paying double. Also, if your neighbor is bad just take the hit if you have good tenants and chalk it up to experience. Fighting with neighbors etc might make you lose a good tenant. --107.72.xxx.xx
