My son and his girlfriend just rented a 400 sf jr. 1 bedroom for $2700 in San Francisco tenderloin section (near the border of Tenderloin & Soma). They are both newly minted computer science graduates. She has a job with Google, he is working remotely with his old company. They had lots of trouble finding a place.
Anything I need to know?

Look out for used needle syringes laying on the ground. They are most likely tainted with Hep A, Hep B, or HIV. Suggest she carry a large rock or sharp stick since those are the only weapons she can use to defend herself if she's attacked. --108.69.xxx.xxx |

Good quality pepper spray and a sturdy wood cane. They both have bad knees from an old injury right????
Kidding aside, I am a geezer and have an actual bad knee. Our town is over run with homeless drawn by handouts. I carry a cane and spray when I go into town. --157.204.x.x |

$2700 for 400sf?!! WOW! I'm speechless.
And the responses seem to indicate it's a bad neighborhood?
Just Wow - crazy pricey! --68.10.xxx.x |

Don't go barefoot. And don't forget the 11% CA income tax. Welcome to Taxifornia. Start reading the Dr. Housing Bubble blog. California peaked in the 1970s.
On the bright side, if their LLs ever want these kids to move out, the kids can hold out for big bucks. In certain instances, LLs have to pay up to $100,000 to legally get tenants to move. --98.146.xxx.xxx |

Why would anyone pay that much to live in a poor crime infested neighborhood??? It just can't be worth that to say you live in SF.
I'll take my small town any day. --98.122.x.xx |

I've been there, years ago...I don't think it's dangerous, just unpleasant. Kind of like the "old" Times Square but without all the neon. It's the kind of place where you might walk out your front door and see a vagrant doing number two on the sidewalk. --72.188.xxx.xxx |

I lived & worked Commercial Real Estate in SF 2X - on the sides of living in Carmel. Sailing there is brutal, traffic was brutal, pretty...... but liberalism doesn't work. Made my Money and got out 4 days before the Big earthquake that destroyed my place in the Marina district
My advice is to pray that sooner than later...... they learn life's lessons.
It is something they have to learn on their own that a quality of life is found elsewhere.

It sounds to me like they are doing well. Good jobs straight out of college....this was just the only neighborhood they could afford. And while it's not a great neighborhood it's convenient to a lot of other parts of the city that are nice.
They will get great experience for their resumes and I'm sure if they decide to have kids they'll leave SF and probably the whole Bay Area. It really isn't affordable to live there long term.

Are they on 6th Street near Van Ness? The Tenderloin has changed a bit over the decades, and several small nice theatres have opened up on Market Street. It's still scary in and around the Civic Center Bart Station late at night too and even near the library. However, I personally still pass by there often on my way to or from some musical performances or the Asian Art museum.
Lots of techies have been robbed of their cell phones, so it is crucial to be very careful not to stare at a phone while in the Tenderloin nearer to Civic Center Plaza although so many people do that anyway. Also, cars that don't stop for pedestrians are an issue at intersections. Most millenials dress down too as is the style, and wearing comfortable shoes helps.
Yep, $2.7k is about right in SF, but I'm shocked that it's that high for the Tenderloin. Best of luck to your daughter who must be extremely bright to have landed a job at google and hope she and her friend are enjoying the cool or cold Summer weather in SF.

I'm with you Egens. I spent a year in the bay area many years ago. Even then SF was over priced and crowded. I found quality of life wasn't to be found there. I have much fonder memories of the Carolinas (I'd probably still be there were it not for a parent with health problems I needed to help out with). Maybe on the next down cycle DH and I can pick up a second home. --71.213.xx.xxx |

I think they better be in "big love" to be living in 400 square feet together !! Upside is ability to save. A huge chunk of pay checks go for rent ... with the size of their home, no need to buy "stuff" as there is no where to keep it --72.70.xxx.x |

The part of Mission Street that's close to 6th Street or even near Van Ness is actually gentrifying very fast. Many dot com companies have set up shop in the area, including galleries, restaurants, and even a Mercedes dealership. The Opera House, symphony hall, and many museums are nearby too. Best of luck to your daughter, and I hope that her rent increase won't be over $100 a month if she decides to renew the lease in a year --107.3.xxx.xxx |
