A woman, self employed , making over 90k a year for construction work, also receive money for ssi and child support, living in neighbor state about 60 miles from our house, now wants to view our rental house. She said she took a 18 month construction project, now she wants to move back.

It does not make any sense to me and I do not want to wast my time to show the place.

I told her we do not want her to move again for next project. What else should I say?

I am not sure the 90k income is true or something is wrong. Why do not they buy their own house at over middle age. Here house is not expensive and 90k is above average household income. --97.91.xxx.xxx

That makes no sense. Ask for five years of back tax forms, to prove that her self employment makes money and she will go away. Of course she may also have minimized her self employment income on the tax returns and so she will lose anyway. If she is claiming to be an engineer of some sort who would make that kind of bucks, then demand to see a copy of her license. --73.178.xxx.xx

A partner of mine made the mistake of renting to someone who needed a place to stay working on a new job, then planning on weekends to travel back home to see the wife and kids. Distance was only 60 miles but traffic would make it a 2 hour trip each way.

The tenant's company was a private contractor doing work for the government. Every few months the government wouldn't make the required payments to the company and all of the temp's would be terminated, subject to funding. NO job, no money and no rent payment. --47.156.xx.xx

No it doesn't make any sense, and I bet she doesn't really earn 90K a year, and there is some problem with the income verification for what she DOES earn, whatever that may be.

Think about it, if you really earned that much money, why would you even mention SSI, which just makes you appear to be a loser? --72.188.xxx.xxx

No, I'm not saying that. I'm just saying that when someone comes with SSI as their income source -- especially a younger person -- it doesn't make them look like good prospects. And that's probably not fair to all of them, I know there are legitimate cases for this, but it's the perception I have at this point, unfortunately. --72.188.xxx.xxx

Next state over? As in moving from IL to MO?

I totally get wanting to do that. Taxes. Short and simple. My Step-father has been complaining about his taxes like you'd not believe!!!!! He lives in IL.

MO has a balanced state budget by law. --131.151.xx.xx

Your applicant should be able to easily produce a Social Security award letter (or benefit letter) that documents the SSI. She should be able to produce a pay stub. She should be able to produce the documentation from the court showing her child support payments. Ask her to show you these documents and keep showing your vacancy. --98.146.xxx.xxx

Jen Z,collecting SSI has to do with the kid having a disability or a perceived disability, very popular among low income people to have the child labeled this way to receive a government check and that is what J FL is referring to,i generally see these checks at about $700 monthly and they are quite proud of the label and the check, child support is simply dad is not in the house and she took him to court and has custody of the child and dad pays child support just like any other divorse or split. --72.231.xxx.xxx

A project manager or layout engineer can easily make 6 figures these days. I made around $65,000 back in the 80's.

The issue with construction is the jobs end or with big companies you have to go to the next job which may be anywhere or find another job. And it's economy dependent. --47.216.xx.xxx

anytime someone moving from IL, just across the river to our area it's usually cause they are running from something, that is almost a given. People who actually make $90k don't advertise it or announce it. Show her the unit when u r there for another reason. I am inclined to add to my screening list... You must have a MO driver's license and MO plates on your car. All welcome, yes you will schedule a viewing, you will get paid to decline if she doesn't qualify but don't disqualify before you are paid to do so. --66.148.xxx.xxx

Ken said what I was trying to say...I think SSI is getting a bad reputation because of those who use it to work the system...kind of like the service animals. I doubt most here are jumping up and down when they hear the tenant wants to use SSI as their income source. But I didn't mean to say that no one should get assistance or that it doesn't help anyone...that came out wrong. And I did have a tenant years ago who was on SSI and I never had any issues with him. --72.188.xxx.xxx
