No offense NE, I know its a common belief,..but I think its more than eyes but perhaps a whole unconscious analysis of a person's countenance.
So,..I HATE when people say that they can tell by "looking someone in the eye" As I have been accused of not looking anyone in the eye, and perhaps judged by eye contact. ( I went to Catholic school for a few years and a nun often said "the eyes are the widows to the soul" and she would judge students (by far usually wrongly) I think I have real good ethics and I do pride myself on honesty.
Why don't I look people rt in the eye? As a kid I had big hearing problems. I was supposed to totally lose my hearing by my teens according 3 specialists. I had my top vertebrae retrained in its movement by a Gonstead- Gillet chiropractor and soon my hearing not only came back but even now,many years later is now super acute.I can hear whispers from great distances and I can hear very high cycles. But certain voice tones are easier to understand if I look at lips,...kind a lip reader of a type,..kind of a gaze at someone's lips,..
