I've never had this done before...someone gave me a quote of $2.50 per linear square foot for install (4.25 wood baseboards)...price does not include any painting. Does this sound right or too high? Thanks.

If it's linear foot, it is not square foot.
Price seems a bit hight to me, but I'm cheap...

If there are some small hallways and small cut outs that need to be done, it can be more time consuming. There are likely to be a few angle cuts needed on long walls.
So, it kind of depends on the layout I suppose as to how good or bad the price seems to be. --50.45.xxx.xx |

Thanks. There are a lot of angle cuts in this house. --72.188.xxx.xxx |

Is that 4 and 1/4 inch tall baseboard? If it includes materials, then it's not too bad a price. --68.10.xxx.x |

I'm a contractor and was installed paint grade molding, after installed laminate flooring. I asked my client if I needed to make the end of the base board molding finished or can I just make it an angle cut -- since it was going to be painted. The client asked how much more it would cost to make the side edge of the molding match the surface. Those were the days before we had instant setting super glues. I quoted an extra $100. They told me not to bother.
When the job was done, I got thanked and paid. A week later my client said I did a horrible job and didn't do good finishing work. By the way, this was a basement conversion. I told the client I was happy to re-do the finished edge of the molding, but I needed my $100. He refused. I had to remind the client that my bid was $800 less than their other installers and $100 wasn't such a big deal....
So I tell you this, if you pay a professional to install your base board molding, be sure that you indicate the way you want it done. For example, I always purchase the molding and then prime and paint it before installation. This way I only have to do touch up instead of making the floor and walls. It saves time and money. --47.156.xx.xx |

As Robert alluded to the devil is in the details.
Is this paint grade or stain grade, mitered or coped inside corners, straight or wavy walls, scribed to the floor, prefinished or unfinished, 1 room or a whole unit, metal or wood framing, chopped up or long runs, insured for WC & liability or no insurance, etc.
At this price it appears as though he wants about $100.00 for an average 12'x12' room. Some LLs will think this is way too high a price others will think it's fair & some will even consider it a deal. Part of this will depend upon the wages in your local area as well as the amount of capable workers available. In the end only you can decide if this is a fair price for getting it done in an acceptable manner & within your time frame.
As a licensed & fully insured legitimate general contractor, I couldn't do it for this price & make an acceptable profit.
Home Tech, National Repair, RS Means & several other companies put out books that breakdown all sorts of home building, repairs & remodeling projects including materials needed & time required to do it. They also have multipliers to adjust the prices for local zip codes through the entire country. Using these most LLs can get a feel for what is involved with doing almost any project as well as a good idea on what their local prices should be.
