I have a tenant who is moving out at the end of this month. They had several unauthorized pets in the unit in addition to the ones I allowed.

Is there a way to know if fleas are in the vacant unit? Should I bomb the place before re-renting just to be safe? Thanks.

Interesting question!

I had do bomb for mites once in an apartment where a tenant had been keeping 2 exotic birds - without my knowledge or approval. --173.48.xxx.xxx

In general bombs for insects don't work. Fleas present an additional problem, you can treat for adult fleas but eggs can hatch at a later date. Had a vacant apt n thought all was good. Turns out New tenant vacuuming excited the flea eggs to hatch. When you clean up the place use a vacuum and throw away the bag if you are concerned about fleas. Also they will bite you if you spend enough time there. Keep the SD as long as possible.

There is a spray for adults and powder for eggs, product names not at hand --66.87.xxx.xxx

J, if you have been using this site for any length of time, the information here seems to indicate that bombing is not the best idea.Putting down flea powder might.Thats why I picked up a gallon jar, even though I had no immediate use for it,Want it you can have it,Don't know what I paid for it,but it's yours for the taking.........charlie.........................................................I'm going to the Irish Feis tomorrow,so check among all the other junk........................ --174.199.x.xxx

J,

Testimg for fleas is easy - just walk in and stand still. Your legs will tell you soon enough!

Fleas can be focused in certain areas where the dogs stayed including the yard.

My experience is no fleas immediately if the dogs were treated with flea meds. When the treated dog is removed there is nothing in place to kill the fleas. The LL’s footsteps make vibrations which trigger the eggs to hatch. Come back 3 days later and be eaten alive.

One test is to walk thru with white socks. Another is to lay down a clean sheet of white paper.

To prove fleas for court we lay down a large white sticky trap made for mice. The fleas like white and cannot unstick. I slip this into a plastic sheet protector.

I had fleas here and then I rescued a dog that already had been treated with a flea product. Poor thing was sick from it for months but is OK now. The result was that there are no fleas here. You can put a dish of water down overnight and they will jump in and drown. --73.178.xxx.xx

Walk through in white socks. You'll soon know.

The issue is that you need to use both a quick kill spray (I hate bombs) and a second product that contains what is described as IGR (Insect Growth Regulator); a product that breaks the cycle from egg to nymph to adult. Sprays tend to kill only the adults; they do nothing to kill fleas in eggs. Thus, you spray; things seem fine and two weeks later you have a new crop of fleas all hungry for your blood (if it makes you feel any better it's only the females that bite as they need blood to lay their eggs and start the whole darn process all over again).

Go to domyownpestcontrol.com and read about the products they have.

J, if you have a crawlspace (doubt you have basement in FL) get the pro to treat that too. We had to treat w/ our pro TWICE, as apparently they had made it down there and we didn't realize. Delayed us by another 2 weeks for re-rent. Live and learn. --96.28.xxx.xxx

Get the cinemax powder and spread it widely at the tenant expense, this is why you should retroactively charge the tenant pet registration fee and monthly rent - they never gave you photo vaccination records. --107.209.xxx.xx
