Has anyone had a tenant complain of ear damage from a smoke alarm? Or have you had ear damage? My range hood broke so the alarm in the next room has been going off. It is really piercing and when I go to silence it I have a problem. Two weeks ago it went off twice. The first time my hearing came back right away. The second time not that fast. Then I blew my nose and my ear stopped hearing and I got a high pitched ringing noise. Have been to ear nose and throat doctor, had an MRI and sphenoid sinus on left side near ear is thickened whatever that means. No bacteria or virus symptoms. There is a ton of mold around outside from rain. I am wondering about the noise damaging my ear? ENT was non commital on that. Flonase helped but made my face break out in hives which is common with that product. Anybody have this happen? My next door neighbor has the exact same thing! A brewery moved into town about a mile away and I was wondering if mold or dust or yeast emissions could be an issue.

No I never get complaints like that from tenants because if they got one sentence out telling me something like that I would cut them off in the middle of the conversation and tell them that they're required by their least to keep that smoke detector in there to save their life in to save my property And I'd let him know that I'm not dealing with dumbness --99.203.xx.xxx

Like NE says Wow!,That Brewery that moved in,do they make liquor or only beer.If they make liquor,I'd visit them and have a couple of good belts whenever your ears start ringing, should cure anything that ails you.Don't think there's anything in the air.........charlie....................Wby does the alarm go off?And also keep away from those doctors,They make things more confusing than they ought! --174.199.x.xxx

I’m with Jo. I’d go visit the brewery and sample their wares. Drink beer on Monday, see if ears ring on Tuesday. Repeat often until you are sure the sample size is adequate.

If a residential grade smoke detector hurts your ears, all I can say is...Wow.

Don’t sweat the sphenoid sinus thickening. It is a non-specific finding the radiologist noted to justify the interpretation fee. It means nothing. --174.192.x.xxx

yup, WOW... Maybe the noise from the alarm had nothing to do with sinus and ear issues. They just happen to occur at the same time. Maybe the high pollen count is bothering you, maybe the mold, probably not the brewery. Funny thing about nature, it averages out, but it always wins.

It's not a problem for my tenants because the first thing they do is to remove the batteries from the smoke detector. Problem solved. --174.216.xx.xx

Thank you so far. I'm 71 so maybe that makes ears break easier from sharp noises. The sphenoid sinus is the one that give post nasal drip. It has the carotid artery on one side and the optic nerve on the other. Not a place easy to do surgery on. It can get infected and give someone encephalitis or meningitis. Pain at the top of the head can be from this one, eye swelling and excess tearing. Thankfully all I have is the ear noise. --73.178.xxx.xx

Read about tinnitus. I’ve had it for more than a year in my left ear. I feel certain it’s from using one of those so- called silent dog whistles. --99.203.xx.xxx

Thank you Jean. I have always been able to hear those dog whistles myself and wondered why people said they were "silent". I will read some more. Sorry you had it for more than a year. I am getting used to it. I had a slight rushing sound before anyway. --73.178.xxx.xx

you must understand that the decibel rating is highly tested and regulated by NFPA 72. National Fire Alarm Code --24.34.xx.xxx

Thank you nhsailmaker. My ears have been highly disrupted by running circular saws in apartments, drills, miter saws, lawnmowers, snowblowers etc. I used ear protection only about half the time I think. And I would have to add that the manufacturer probably calculated an "average" level of decibels meaning some units can't be heard and others will blow a hole in one's ear. --73.178.xxx.xx

I have had tinnitus for at least 20 years. It can be debilitating at times. Some people with tinnitus are suicidal. Luckily Ive learned to block it out. There is no cure so dont fall for ads that tell you it can be cured. When I tell people that have never experienced it they look at me like im crazy. Its like someone screaming in your ear 24/7. I wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy. --76.92.xx.xx

Sometimes a sudden loud noise can take away your hearing if you already have hearing loss. My husband took my mother out to teach her how to load and shoot her pistol in 2011 and they did not wear hearing protection. She lost her hearing after the first shot and never got it back. It is a good idea however to have a doctor check for middle ear infection or wax build up. It sounds like you have had a really good workup. Tinnitus can come with hearing loss or with middle ear problems. I get tinnitus when my asthma medicines make me have a middle ear effusion. --216.23.xxx.xx
