Did anyone here about this in the news yesterday? Delta has banned ESA pitbulls from it's flights and also won't allow individuals with multiple ESAs onboard.

Ann, obviously deception of that sort can't really be stopped. However, I believe that good screening is going to weed out the types that lead towards that deception. If in their minds they are going to say no pets and move in and play the ESA card, they are
going to have other strange things in their screening

I don't allow dogs in multi units. Service dogs I obviously would. But if someone NEEDS a dog to SUPPORT their emotions, I don't want them as a tenant. Several 100 thousand years of human existence on this planet and in the last 15 we all of a sudden need animals to make us feel better and get through the day? Sorry, I'm not buying it, no matter who tells me I have to. Service dogs excluded of course.
If they brought one in under the ESA premise, I would give them notice for when their lease is up. --50.32.xxx.xxx |

I agree that some of these people have other issues that disqualify them, but it is a fine line to walk saying no ESA’s. There are a few local landlords that screwed up and are now involved in federal discrimination lawsuits. Those are very costly. We need to advocate at the state and federal level for reasonable requirements like local doctor note under continued care with, and fines for fraud. --24.61.xxx.xx |

Still Learning, don't get me wrong, I'm not going to discriminate regarding the ESA. I'm going to deny for some other obvious and easy reasons.
I don't know other LL's experiences here with applicants that have ESA's, but all of mine have been deadbeats or borderline deadbeats. All in all, it's not a difficult issue to get around. Evictions, credit, no income or insufficient income, criminal history, general life drama, section 8, the shady standoffish guy that comes to look at the unit with his girlfriend and on and on.

I’m pretty sure Delta is going to lose at least part of this battle. If someone has a trained SD that has the blocky head that people call Pit bull, and that SD handler is turned away at the gate, I can see the news and violation. We are already discussing it on a SD forum I hang out on. Supposed an armed service vet in a wheelchair has a pit mix to do WC pulls and retrieval’s and is turned away. The news channels will be all over it.
That said, I’m all in favor of some rules. I really want CGC to be required along with limiting to a single ESA. --64.251.xxx.xxx |

As for all ESA users being deadbeats, I have one right now that is a graduate student in engineering. She initially was willing to pay the pet fee, but is definitely working with a mental health professional and has issues. She is working on training her dog as well. By the time she leaves, it will be a well trained dog. The issue I see is that most ESA dogs end up screwed up because their person is screwed up. Her dog passed my Scooter test initially, but has started freaking out when Scooter comes with me over to change the air filter and other stuff. Barb, from what I'm seeing above it looks like this is referring to ESAs not SDs. I see that as a big difference.
Insurance companies have been discriminating against dangerous dog breeds for years. Dangerous breeds are not a protected class.
I see this as Delta starting this wave of keeping the potentially dangerous animals from attacking crew and passengers and I believe it will hold up. No one should have the right to put their own comfort above other people's health and welfare. --50.45.xxx.xx |

Yes, Scooter is my trained SD. He goes everywhere with me. He even went to the Mr. LL Boot camp last July! He goes to my W2 job and pretty much everywhere with me. He is a lab mix. I don’t advertise what the mix part is, as it is only 1/4 and is on some banned breed lists.
The new Delta policy is supposed to be applied to SDs as well as ESAs according to what I’ve read. I agree that insurance companies have been discriminating against some breeds, and agree that there is reason. The issue is that I know of one program that is ADi accredited that sometimes trains dogs that may look pit bullish. --64.251.xxx.xxx |
