so have not just a crack but a broken piece (triangle piece) ....should i pour concrete on top and patch it or get someone to lift the piece out fix ground underneath (assume it is now washing away with so much rain and hence the break in concrete)
I also wonder if this is after math of harvey???

Can you live with it? Maybe wait a few years until it gets really bad. Or, jack hammer it out, and lay new concrete tying into old. I don't recommend piers unless you're doing a whole section because the piered part won't shift, but the rest will and that will crack. --108.69.xxx.xxx |

A handyman should own a small 50 pound jack hammer or own a sledge hammer. I would have the piece broken out and filled in with high strength concrete repair/patch -- good for over 18,000 PSI. It is available in quick setting - hard in less than 1 hour. --47.156.xx.xx |

Is the broken piece "displaced"? In other words, has it sunk relative to the rest? If not, then just seal the cracks with an elastomeric patching compound.
Pouring concrete on top will be the biggest mistake you can make. As a home inspector, I write up those things all the time "The driveway has had a "handyman" attempted repair. Although some people tolerate this poor quality repair for awhile, it ultimately will need repaired by a professional" --99.92.xxx.xxx |

If it is displaced, there is a process called "mudjacking" that can sometimes be used...contact a concrete contractor. --99.92.xxx.xxx |

The go to 1st step for concrete repair is to use self leveling concrete caulk, as mentioned. You may need to put a backer rod (round foam rope) in the crack or pre-caulk it w/ silicone or something cheap to keep the concrete caulk from draining forever into the ground. If you believe the broken piece needs to be replaced rent a wet saw (concrete saw) and cut out an area larger than the broken piece. Here is where you will find out the quality of the driveway. The concrete should be 4" minimum thick and have
at least welded wire in it, but ideally rebar. As long as your repair is less than 4SF I think you can add gravel and tamp it w/ hand tamper and re-pour w/ high psi concrete mix. --24.194.xx.xx |

Sounds like either mudjacking or a more invasive replacement is in order. --99.92.xxx.xxx |

Oh that's a small area...forget mudjacking...dig it out and pour new area. I don't know the best technique for tying into th existing slab though. --99.92.xxx.xxx |

The concrete streets in my neighborhood are being repaired right now, and many spots are just like you described. They cut out the damaged spot, then drill a couple of holes into the surrounding slabs and insert L-shaped rebar into the holes which protrude into the damaged spot. Concrete is then poured into the area and smoothed. The rebar helps tie the pieces together. --204.210.xxx.xxx |
