Just got back from looking at some houses.

Old house in city.... Front living room has no ceiling lights, only half hot wall outlets on the switch...

Instead of paying an electrician $$$ to add a ceiling fixture, anybody hook up some of that LED strip lighting and plug it into an outlet? I was thinking of possibly adding some kind of trip strip a few inches down from the ceiling on the wall and sticking the led strip to it, then run the supply wire down the wall to the transformer at the wall outlet.... Thoughts?

Same house, upstairs attic converted to 2 bedrooms with low headroom. No ceiling lights because its too low. Thought it might be doable up there too. Anybody ever use the LED lighting strip tape? Ever seen it used that was attractive or at least not ugly?

Hammer, the fact that the half outlet is on a switch, means they used a floor lamp

You putting a floor lamp from Walmark might be cheaper and less gaudy.....

Hammer: The only thing missing from your description was duct tape. Just add a few floor lamps. It's pretty common in old houses. However, if attic open above, they can run romex from switch to a light fixture and then connect the electrical outlet so it works on same fixed circuit as other outlet. Although, floor lamps would be much easier, but if rental, I'd consider ceiling fixture. --108.69.xxx.xxx

It would be a rental. Upon review, there are no switches in the upstairs. Would have to add something so might as well do it right. --137.119.xxx.xxx

I have a lot of places like this, I fish a wire down to the outlet from a wall sconze location so the room lights up , the sconze has a twist switch or I add a pull chain so they can choose floor lamp or the light I added. --76.188.xxx.xx

Like Vee I have a few places with outlets and wall sconces above them. I removed all the older sconces w/ the outlet in them. Since the attic is finished I assume you can't easily run wire for ceiling fixtures to the rooms below. --24.194.xx.xx

My worry is that they have to navigate some steep stairs, then stumble across a dark room to the floor lamp. Ill probably install a low profile LED ceiling light and wire in a switch.

Or I might use a wireless control by the staircase and plug a floor lamp into an outlet with the receiver and call it done. --137.119.xxx.xxx

You can run wire molding and surface mounted boxes to make a light /switch run. The new led fixtures seem about 3" deep and are plastic. I used a 7"wide one w a metal ring in a closet. Came from Lowes. --66.87.xxx.xxx

Wire mold is the quick, easy, less costly solution. A LOT less labor costs if you are paying an electrician. My electrician prefers the plastic over the metal. And it does look nicer. --64.222.xxx.xxx
