I'm gathering estimates to replace the air conditioner in my duplex, and I'd like to get your opinions. So far I have 6 quotes and they're all within a $1500 range. Aside from the differing SEER ratings, is any one better quality/better value than the others?
Tempstar TSA5, up to 15 SEER
Tempstar T4A3, up to 13 SEER
Lennox 14ACX, up to 14 SEER
Lennox 13ACX, up to 13 SEER
Goodman GSX13/CAPT3131B4, 16 SEER
Goodman GSX130301/CAPF3030B6, 13 SEER
Are there important questions that people often forget to ask before signing on the dotted line? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Goodman 13 seer.
Buy THE cheapest unit. You will not be able to raise rents because The ac uses slightly less electricity.
The higher line units are marketed to homeowners not to investors. --72.172.xxx.xx |

I go with the cheapest Goodman I can find. I typically pay about $1400-1700 for the equipment, and around $800 for the labor. I have a Goodman hook up with MFS supply. A national drop shipper. I do not want high end equipment in my rentals. Simple simple simple. No extra garage to break. Tenants don’t take proper care of equipment anyway, that 16 seer will not get you one penny more in rent than the 13 seer willl. --75.141.xxx.xxx |

No knows if all coal fired generating stations were phased out what the price for electricity would be. Two parts to any heating and cooling system. First the size of HVAC system then envelope which means the heat loss or heat gain. A well insulated building the HVAC system can be downsized as there is less loss or heat gain. --147.194.xxx.xx |

Brand is less important than system design (sizing and ductwork) and installation.
Use the brand your installer is most familiar with and you will get a better job.
I used to install lots of Lennox, but the parts are only available to dealers.
I install mostly Goodman now because the parts are readily available and mostly generic.
I like the Goodman 16 SEER system, but it costs more and is more complex than the 13 SEER. More complex means more breakdowns and more expensive repairs.
13 SEER for rentals. (14 SEER required in my state).

I agree with gevans that install quality is more important than the brand. Goodman 13 SEER is fine. Call the company and start by asking who their best installer is. They will balk and say "They are all good". Keep pushing and ask the owner who installed his last one...then ask for that guy/woman to do yours. --99.92.xxx.xxx |

Many names TX
I am very interested in hearing more about the Goodman AC...
Can I order one online, have it shipped, then have my AC guy install it?
I think I paid $3700 for a 2 ton package unit swap out (no duct work) a couple years ago. Took 2 guys about 2 hours to install have have it running.
Might be a good area to save some $$$$.. ??? --137.119.xxx.xxx |

Hammer. The drop shipping takes place within an hour of order, and it is ready for me to pick it up at the Goodman supply house. No actual shipping, but you have to go to Goodman closest to you. Shoot me an email on the aol system using the handle mr1874. I’ll send you my source --75.141.xxx.xxx |

Single speed system, I use what I can find cause the guts are all about the same, different color paint. If you can match the heater that makes it look nice but the ductwork calculations must be done correctly for any system to operate as close to nameplate specs as possible, have the new outdoor unit put on a stand built for your roof, hard to steal and you can tell during a driveby if has been tampered with at all, I mount a new omni-directional tv antenna there when it is finished and put the CATV cable in with the line set to drop in the laundry room where the splitter sends it around to many rooms. --76.188.xxx.xx |

If this is for a rental, I would go with a one speed motor, simple thermostat and easy change filter system. --47.156.xx.xx |
