I have a 1/8" crack along the basement wall and the wall is slightly bowed. The city inspector has told me I can't rent it until I get a engineering report that states the house is safe. I told him the foundation hasn't moved at all in the 12 years I have owned the property but he still wants the report. Do I have any recourse against the city?

All I can really tell you is that if you decide to get the engineer or whatever the codes guys want to verify this. You need to keep interviewing engineers until you get the one who writes down what YOU NEED!

Lead the conversation with them until they get the hint and write it up the way you want. --174.201.xx.xx

Charlie, the building could be 50 years old. Or more. It's probably one of those annual inspections or one of those tenant turnover inspections. Most of the time it's been covered with boxes or whatever else is in the way. Who knows. --174.201.xx.xxx

I don't believe there is a way to appeal a building inspector. You are basically at his mercy. If you give him a hard time he finds something else. Pay an engineer to evaluate your place and tell them to say it is safe. --72.95.xxx.xx

What Ed PA said and find out what needs to be done to fix it. Do you have earthquakes in IA? Might have to jack up that side and redo something or maybe not. Find out. --73.178.xxx.xx

These gestapo inspections weren't there decades ago. You let it happen on your watch.

Now your task is harder to overturn bad government.

But now that you are an adult citizen you MUST stop what you are doing and make it the biggest fight of your life.
