I did a search on "urine" and found a couple things this year...but most addressed damage (like stains). One person mentioned Odorxit to get rid of the odors. What other ideas do you have to get rid of odors? I don't have any carpets...I'd estimate 70% hardwood, 20% vinyl, and 10% ceramic tile in my units.

Thanks for any ideas.

In my experience, with hard surfaces as you describe the odorxit is quite effective. --70.178.x.xx

In my experience the only thing that will get rid of cat urine odor is bleach. Remove carpet and padding. Mix 50-50 water bleach in a pump sprayer. Open all the windows turn off ac. Wear a mask. QUICKLY spray the urine stains on the subfloor wetting completely. Get out of the room fast and clear out of the house for 2 hours minimum. I turn any ceiling fans on as I leave the room. *****danger alert***** the bleach and urine will react and create chlorine gas which is BAD for you! It will burn your eyes and lungs.

Once the reaction is done and dry (1-2 days with fans on) use original Killz to seal the floor in case you missed a small spot. It also helps to stabilize the surface of the subflooring as cat urine will dissolve nails and doesn't do much for particle board or plywood subflooring.

This is why we have a NO CATS policy but allow dogs.

We tried spending $50-80/gallon on fancy enzyme odor eliminators which didn't work and made the house smell like febreeze and cat pee cologne. --137.119.xxx.xxx

Using an ozone machine is very helpful to burn off the enzymes like the bleach idea, if you do the bleach treat the lower 20 inches of drywall as scratching opens the drywall to absorb the urine, here only nutured cats and renters insurance with owners name on policy to help in this expense. The ozone machine needs a few days with unit closed up. --76.188.xxx.xx

A black light Flashlight will be very helpful to see the location in each room of the urine spots. Under the black light urine will show fluorescent yellow. Check out chewy.com or walmart.com for purchasing black light flashlights.

Since you have no carpeting but have hardwood, vinyl and ceramic. The vinyl is the quickest to clean up, hardwood urine will soak into it and ceramic is ok BUT the grout may be a problem with urine soaking into the grout. You should use TSP to help break down the urine. THEN order from Odorxit: Odor Eliminator the best product to spray on the urine after cleaning with TSP..

The only concern is when you find urine along the baseboard. It could have soaked behind the baseboard, and into the drywall depending on the time the urine laid there and the number of times the area was urinated on. You may have to pull the baseboard to check if the urine soaked into the back of it and into the drywall.

There are NO short cuts to remedy this problem with urine.

The toxic nature of bleach I would stay away from it.

Hoosier,

Start with a blacklight to locate the source. It will show DRIED urine, not wet urine, even in daylight. $12 and up on Amazon. I stepped up to the $20 model.

Scrub the area. Use a shop vac to LIFT the residue rather than spread it around or deeper.

I start with OdorXit. Usually takes 3-4 treatments. No fans, let it air dry slowly. Must use it liberally so it flows into the cracks like the urine did.

If that does not do the trick, get a saw and cut out the bad stuff.

Bleach does not eradicate urine. The cleaning process does help and the bleach odor overpowers the urine odor but the molecules that make urine stink are still there and will be back on the next hot, humid Indiana day. (like today!)

I use Zinsser BIN shellac base to block stains and odors AFTER treatment. It has better covering and dealing power than Kilz.

Good questions! I've lost count. 13 to go?

BRAD

Each problem can have a different unique solution. On hardwood floor I cleaned the cat pee and that was not enough so I encapsulated it with varnish. --73.178.xxx.xx
