We bought a new refrigerator today. The salesperson asked if we had a water line which we do. He asked if it was plastic which it is. He said good they are the best kind.

We are getting rid of our current refrigerator due to the constant leaks from the ice maker. We've had it repaired / replaced numerous times but eventually it happens again.

When we got home I looked up the options for water lines; plastic, steel mesh or copper.Logic tells me steel or copper would be more durable. What am I missing here as to his recommendation for plastic over the other 2 options.

And even if plastic is the best option shouldn't we put a new line in rather than using the old one?

I had a plastic ice-maker line leak after 10 years. Replaced it with SST braided and haven't had a problem. Has a number of other plastic hoses leak over the years for sinks, toilets and washing machines. Replaced them all with SST braid and haven't had a leak. My experience doesn't agree with the salesman. --72.95.xxx.xx

The braided steel lines are the best by far...I see lots of floor damage during my inspections from plastic ones. They do fine for a few years, but then leak. Copper is good but not as flexible. And avoid "saddle valves" on older homes..use a "tee" instead. --99.92.xxx.xxx

Braided stainless. Use nothing else. Especially don't reuse the old plastic one. They get brittle after a few years and disaster strikes. --98.122.x.xx

NC,Charlotte, what Gevans said is good .but no matter what you use,it'll probably still be there when you have to get a new refrigerator with an ice maker.why not try hooking it up properly in the first place..............charlie................... --174.192.xx.xxx

Hoosier: What is the difference between a saddle value and a tee? And what do consider an older home? --71.75.xx.xx

I asked my plumber how to get waterline into fridge that is in cabinet. He said order 10' braided line and hook it up while fridge is out of box. then push it in and feed the line into the floor. Very slick. --173.15.xx.xxx
