Message:

I just found out that someone called my brother's ex-wife about buying one of my houses. I assume they got her number off one of those sites that shows connections between different people. She doesn't even live in Florida.

I understand the mailings--that's how the game is played--I don't get mad about them I just dispose. And now I'm getting phone calls which I don't answer. But doesn't this seem like it's going too far?

Your information is sold and traded everywhere. There is no regulation to prevent it. Until there are laws to protect it and punishment to deter it will continue. --208.102.xxx.xxx

I understand that information is out there...I'm questioning the judgement of the wholesaler who made the call to my sister in law.

They've already tried to contact me and I've ignored them by not answering their calls so they contact someone who doesn't own the house looking for me? Do they really think these obnoxious tactics will get someone to sell the house to them? --72.188.xxx.xxx

Even when there is regulation to stop it, it has no effect. The companies that do it just move off shore where the law doesn't apply.

I call landlords out of state to get landlord references. Sometimes I have to track them down.

It is odd to call someone out of state, hoping to buy a house that isn't for sale. Possibly there is something else going on here besides buying real estate. No telling what scams are using false pretenses to get a foot in the door. --174.216.xx.xxx

Ignoring the direct contact doesn't mean they have gotten a no from you. It means they have failed to contact you. If this were not the case, the collection industry wouldn't be what it is today. If the information is there some will be more aggressive to contact you more than others. Since there are no hard defined rules the game will continue to evolve and what is considered crossing the line will become the new normal. --208.102.xxx.xxx

Oregon, I hadn't thought of that...very good point.

Personally I just don't answer the phone anymore if I don't recognize the number, as sure no one else here does either. That's the world we live in now. as of the past couple years. --72.188.xxx.xxx

JAC that's what I'm afraid of too. I had a bad feeling when the Do Not Call list failed a few years ago, but so far it's been only a nuisance. But it could get worse.

Maybe they think they will hear you are dead, dying, or moving into a nursing home. Maybe they think relative will be happy to help you make money and dump that money pit. Coming in the back door. Can work. Maybe, just maybe. It's a numbers game. Call 100 numbers. Perhaps buy one house. Why do you think they called your relative? --99.203.xx.xx

If they had done their homework and knew for sure someone was dead I could understand it. I'm pretty sure they don't think I'm in a nursing home. They know my age from the info website they snooped on to get her phone number.

What they did is in bad taste and intrusive IMO. --72.188.xxx.xxx

I mail out quite a bit of letters trying to buy houses and get some that way.I would call this way over the line,it kind of implies that you are in trouble and they can help by contacting you.It seems amateurish also because it must take a lot of time and effort to track down a bunch of people that way.I just mail them out and see what sticks --72.231.xxx.xxx

Often when I'm selling a property that I own 100% myself, some realtor get my partners phone numbers from other partnership properties and calls them instead of me..... Mixing up my business with others. I return the favor by reporting the realtor to their Broker, office manager and even sometimes I call their spouse at work telling them that their real estate agent spouse is meeting strangers at open houses. They get mad at me for doing that but say it's a free country and they can call anyone they please about my for sale property. --47.156.xx.xx

Is she on a Facebook page that you use? If someone looked you up on Facebook and your page isn't private enough they may have found her name. Or another relative's page might not be private enough. --73.178.xxx.xx

This is likely a 3rd party service guaranteed to bring off-market properties to the wholesaler. I had one of these call my Dad about a fixer house of mine that I would actually like to sell. Tried to call the number that was left with my Dad. It seemed to be a cell phone VM with no greeting and VM box was full. Obviously not a pro. But no offense taken on my part. I try not to sweat the small stuff. --166.137.xxx.xx

I too would not get too upset about it. Some people are pretty aggressive and creative when they want something. But they can't make me sell if I don't want to, so I can ignore them, or tell them off if I want. I gave up the landline because the only calls I got there were ones I didn't want. --108.44.xx.xxx

I rarely answer the phone anymore either. A PM company started calling here and I blocked the number. --72.188.xxx.xxx
