I WAS going to mark this Off Topic but realized the Royal Wedding lifted my DREAMS. The organization, attention to detail, bringing the finest efforts...

Talk about a DREAM SESSION!

-fancy cars with chauffeurs

-fancy carriages

-matching horses

-perfect uniforms

-trumpets fanfaring (when I enter the room!)

-castles

-priceless tiara

-designer gown

-my favorite Jag to drive off into the sunset!

Over there, you're either in or out by birth. But HERE I can elevate myself from serf to duke no matter who my parents are.

I can build my own empire, right in my home town, without an army or ships. What a blessing!

Now, where can I get one of those AWESOME bear fur hats!?

I know of a family that moved from England many years ago to the United States for BETTER OPPORTUNITIES. Jobs were an issue at the time in England.

No expenses were spared on The Royal Wedding. And the costs of the Royal Wedding was over the top!!! Plus Harry is 6th in line to the throne WELL thats not going to happen. PLUS in time Prince George or Charlotte or LOUIE will have kids and then Harrys heir to the throne is non-heir to the throne. It's sooo sad no King Harry!!! Oh Well he will be ONLY a Duke!!!

Many young girls DREAM of marrying a PRINCE and having that DREAM WEDDING!!! That's great to DREAM but who's going to pay for it. When they are NOT a member of the Royal Family. Wedding costs in the US of $25,000 or more. ELOPING IS a bargain and for many the best option.

You think YOUR taxes are high in the USA. A socialist country like England taxes are extremely high.

I wish them well but would not want to be in their shoes. Under a microscope 24/7!!! NOR would I want to live in the UK!!!

Our opportunities are endless in these United States of America. And look at many of your tenants that will always be a tenant due to their OWN choosing. NO one chose it for them; they chose to not own a home nor make it one of their goals in life to own a house. FORGET owning a rental property.

The other day I read that a high school drop out is now worth $300 Million. ONLY in the USA can that happen. BRAVO!!!

A Coronation or a Papal Conclave are exciting to watch, because they deal with the global stage--- but weddings have a more personal flavor, and if you're not invested in the individuals' future, it pings your radar, but you don't pay much attention. All the tabloid drama of the 90's kind of squashed my interest in the fortunes of the House of Windsor. Royalty is cool in the abstract, but it's rarely something to emulate, either nowadays or historically. :) You remember Ruby Payne--- we're just as far away from Old Money in our values and our decision-making as the lowest strata of our tenants are from us! :) So they're a bit like aliens... but aliens with way more real estate than I'll ever dream of having! :P

I think my favorite internet comment I've read so far has been, "A prince marries a television actress, thereby depriving two normal people of a fairy tale ending." :P Ha! --96.46.xxx.xx

Oo! Ooo!

So, during the time of Henry VIII, about a third of the land was owned by the nobility and aristocracy; about a third of the land was owned by the Church; and about a third of the land was held elsewhere-- by ordinary people, whatever.

Then, you have the dissolution of the monasteries. (1529-1540'ish) Poof! The Crown confiscates this 1/3 of the resources-pie, which is divided between about 850 convents/abbeys/monasteries/whatever, and claims it for itself. In about 4 years, about 800 of those institutions are gone. But the Crown isn't strong enough to retain all that land/resources/power etc for itself. He's compelled to parcel out much of it amongst the Nobility. Which is why pretty much every great historic houses postdates the time of the Dissolution. Some are Tudor; some are Elizabethan; some are later; but for the very few that predate it, you have things like Blickling Hall (purchased by the Boleyn family in 1450) but the current design of the current structure is 17th century. Or you have Longleat House-- which was built on the remains of Longleat Priory, which was suppressed and then confiscated, and the current structure dates to 1580.

Up until they started playing with the socio-economic-religious pie, if you had someone who was better off than his neighbor, generally he might have more cattle, or his house might be a bit bigger, but most people were pretty much in the same state. There wasn't this massive gulf between you and your neighbor. Once you've got all this wealth, though, getting redirected into fresh hands--- that's when you start getting these stately manors and massive concentrations of wealth. And it wasn't just real estate and rents that were lost--- schools, and hostels, and hospitals, and a significant safety-net for the poor, and all sorts of things. --96.46.xxx.xx

Meghan Markle's father is descended from two kings. One was a king in Scotland and another English king I had not heard of. According to Wikipedia she is also worth millions from her acting career and royalties. She attended college in California and studied theater an International studies. So someone who knew them both introduced them and a princess living in America married a prince. When they met she asked him what he did for a living and he said, I'm a prince. She is descended from English kings and slaves from Georgia. It's an amazing story really. I turned on the telly just as they read their vows. I love the buildings and the carriages and the horses and the soldiers uniforms. I love that church. There is one similar in Princeton NJ and I love that one too. We gave her a wonderful present from America. We gave her our weather here on the east coast because they had rare days of sun and seventy degrees and we got their rain due to a high pressure area hanging over the north Atlantic. I'm glad I watched. --73.178.xxx.xx

The wedding was like a national Holiday and showed the amazing UK pride and patriotism.

Good for them and it only cost a drip of money compared to our waste. USA taxpayers paid for a Gas Station in Afghanistan That Practically No One Can Use: $43 Million

For the price of $43 million, the Department of Defense built a gas station in Afghanistan that fills cars with compressed natural gas, or CNG.

Problem is, almost no Afghan cars run on CNG. Further, the car conversion to CNG costs up to $800, and the average Afghan makes about $690 a year. --24.34.xx.xxx

It looks like a fun day for people who go to the wedding, even the people who just line the parade route. --108.28.xxx.xxx

I woke up at 7:30 and my wife was watching. They were riding down the long street in a carriage. I kept thinking my usual question: "WHY?"

Why spend so much money on pomp and "tradition" while belly aching that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer?

Why have a monarchy that is purely symbolic?

It was mildly entertaining for about 15 minutes...then I started checking rent rolls from Friday's deposits. I may not be a price or a duke, but the kingdom is growing and prosperous!

Yes, one can dream of something like this, but it is not my dream. It was big, but to me ultimately pointless. Remember Charles and Dianna's wedding? Similar level of pomp. A happy marriage it was not. My wife and I have lasted longer than they did, and our total bill for the wedding was under $7,000. $12,000 if you count the reception and honeymoon.

Deanna gave a very good summary of how the English nobility funds itself and how it came to own much of the land in Europe. Other nobility have built up business empires. Something like 20 nobles are wealthier than the Queen. In former years, they would have banded together and overthrown her, but who today wants to be a perpetual figurehead? --173.19.x.xxx
