Just got off the phone with a tenant who attempted to pay rent with cash at Wells Fargo. WF would not accept it,..even in my business account!

I told the tenant to buy a money order at WF and then turn around deposit the money order.

Banks not accepting cash,...it is unbelievable. --68.63.xxx.xx

We've had several threads about this lately, Roy. Some bank managers have told some people that business accounts would not be affect, but when I called the main 800, they stressed in detail that they would be. --50.82.xxx.xx

WMH - You were right - business accounts would be affected. I may have to send out a letter to my tenants encouraging them to open an account at WF or start buying Money Orders again.

Like you said in the other post, tenants are withdrawing cash from an ATM and then walking into a WF branch to make a deposit,..however, now the teller won't accept it!

Reality hit home today. --68.63.xxx.xx

Had a tenant who was able to deposit cash at another branch but was told only until months end. My branch says business accounts are ok with an ID.

Manager at my branch is inquiring up the food chain to get a definitive answer. Apparently some confusion amount the ranks. --47.185.xxx.xxx

I don't deal with WF or any other large bank. However, how can a business not make a cash deposit? What about the grocery store? WalMart? Convenience Stores? Gas stations? they all receive cash from customers that end up in the bank accounts. --72.70.xxx.xx

I had to show my driver's license before BofA would take an $1,100 cash rent payment last month. And I am one of their top tier depositors. So I am using the cash. I paid property tax with $1,100 cash today. It didn't really cover the whole cost as I had to add a check for $300. --73.178.xxx.xx

I'm surprised seasoned landlord's deal with big banks at all. Small banks are so much more flexible regarding loans that it makes more sense to be with the small ones for other stuff as well.

Wells Fargo ended for me in 08-09 when I went in there to cash a check and they wanted my fingerprints. Haha. No. --50.107.xxx.xx

My branch manager reported back to me that upon verifying with higher ups Business accounts CAN accept cash with ID. I hate the riga-marole at WF. I pay a manager (American) of my condo in the Dominican Republic $25/mo. It became too much to drive across town so many times, so I tried to pay ahead $100/qtr into his US Wells Fargo bank acct. They refused. They wanted me to open an acct with them, then transfer from one internal acct to another. If it was just a paper drill I was willing--but I found out a new acct in WF requires a $1500 minimum balance at all times! You have to pay $1500 for the privilege of banking there?? Imagine, they had a problem with a crumby $100 every 3 months! Ah, NO!

I doubt your tenants, or anyone for that matter, has an extra $1500 to just sit around in acct for the convenience of the bank. --108.87.xx.xxx

I don't care for the bigger banks. I find them morally and fiscally corrupt for the most part (their law suites ans SEC run ins speak volumes). I deal with local banks and credit unions where I get better customer service. My day job is in the IT world at one of the big banks where I could have free accounts but I'll never open an account with them. I see too much of how they go about doing things.

So If refusing to accept cash deposits becomes a trend with other banks I wonder if the Amish will start paying their bills in chickens, pigs, and cows? Wonder if Amish landlords will pay mortgages that way and will the banks react to that one. Lol --174.233.x.xx

Smaller banks/credit unions will eventually follow suit. The only rationale for this new policy to get everyone to bank electronically and move to a cashless economy.

Showing ID: are they photocopying and storing that ID? Because otherwise it makes no sense. The policy is supposed to prevent "money laundering" by having random unknown people deposit cash. But just showing an ID is not going to prevent that - the teller isn't going to remember the info on the ID! --50.82.xxx.xx

One of my credit cards is with Bank of America [Its predecessor was MBNA America]. I like to go directly to the bank branch to pay my monthly billing statement [ I just love the peace of mind and satisfaction with having that paid receipt already attached, and the account is settled!]. Last Summer, they instituted the policy that they needed to see and record my ID when I proceeded to pay my bill in cash. To this day, I don't understand why they do this. To see whether I'm trying to pass bad bills? Trying to determine whether I'm a money launderer? --99.203.xxx.xx
