This past fall many people in our town were complaining of stink bug invasion. I have found 2 inside since the weather is warming. Check to see if this is a consistent issue or just a one off year. --24.61.xxx.xx

Steve OH the soil around the house is smelly-- could you dig it up and put new soil down? I mean its just as ridiculious. WMH NC hit it.

When tenants make this type complaint-- your standard -- and practce this answer should be-- you know I was just telling my wife the same thing. Not much can be done except let nature take it's course. Have a great day or weekend. --99.103.xxx.xxx

Steve, does your lease clearly make tenants responsible for all pest eradication? --108.219.xx.xxx

Cutting down the trees will not get rid of bugs of any kind.

Unless that pest control guy is willing to put a money backed guarantee that there will be no more bugs if you cut the trees down.... which I will give you a guarantee that he won't do that.

Just tell the tenant no. --174.216.xx.xxx

It's not the trees. Stink bugs look for a warm place to live. It must be a little chillier this year so they are coming in all the time. Now, make sure these people know that they are not allowed to destroy your landscaping because when you refuse they might take it upon themselves to rip out the trees. Tell them right now the cost of damage to any of the trees will be five hundred dollars per tree. If they are month to month send them a lease addendum. --69.141.xxx.xxx

Stink bugs like fruits, not pines. They are a problem in a lot of places as they are from asia with few predators here. Very few insecticides will affect them. They are a big problem to farmers growing all sorts of fruits and fruit trees. So, no, your taking down the pines is not going to help.

Sealing the house more might help but like boxelder bug they are good at getting in through tiny cracks you can't even find.

If we're talking about boxelder bugs I'll say they are prolific in Portland but harmless. Neighbor in full sun location recently had a spray treatment to hold them off, seems to be working, the poop droppings are annoying but harmless. Boxelder are considered benificials, often appearing with ladybugs, another beneficial. Short lifespan indoors, tolerate the cycle instead of squishing them (stinky!). --172.58.xx.xxx

I found this information helpful, as we get both: If the bug is on pine trees, it is a “pine seed bug” (Leptoglossus occidentalis), or the “western conifer seed bug”. It informally has been referred to as a “stink bug” , which describes the the unpleasant odor it emits when squashed. It is often confused with the brown marmorated stink bug, but is not part of the stink bug family.

After a few years of small stinkbug populations around here, we seemed to get 3 or 4 times more last year - possibly because the preceding winter was extremely mild. We also saw many more of the pine seed bugs than usual.

I like myob's way of handling the complaint! --71.175.xxx.xxx
