Just when everything is rolling around fine, a possible drug problem. How would you handle the following?

Resident in one unit complains her eyes and throat are burning. There's no structural problems, sewage, etc. that is causing this. She's convinced resident below is cooking meth or cocaine, something like that. I tell her to call the cops, which she does. Cops trace the smell to a crockpot, in which is steand said they found nothing.

Fast forward to now-resident continues to have problems, so did a drug test of her wall, and says it came back showing cocaine residue. But that doesn't prove anything either - how long has it been there, and where did it come from?

I'm not looking to parse out whether these people are doing drugs; the cops found nothing. I just want to solve the problem. I was thinking of just not renewing the lease of the residents who are the subject of the complaints. Sometimes it's hard to tell who's cooking drugs and by then you have a huge problem.

What say everyone? --67.165.xx.xx

Keep deflecting to the cops.

If the cops found nothing, then what's the issue? I suspect that if the downstairs resident was cooking drugs, that stopped the minute the cops checked their apt. If it was a problem before, there's no way they're going to do it now.

Sounds like she's reacting to something in her apartment. You could either remove her or try to find what's causing issue. Could try scrubbing walls, cleaning carpet, and cleaning AC vents. Maybe the previous tenant living in her apartment was the drug cook and she's reacting to remains of his craft.

Or she's just hypersensitive and wrongly locked on to the people below and won't let it go. --108.69.xxx.xxx

She claims the neighbors are making drugs and the cops say it's food cooking in a crock pot?

I think you are dealing with a mental health issue.

Hopefully her lease is up soon. --75.73.xxx.xxx

I know this isn't the case but the first thing that popped into my head reading your post was that SHE's the one smoking crack and she's completely lost it? --72.188.xxx.xx

Trying to think what makes my eyes and throat burn and that would be wood smoke, onions and some cleaning products. Do you have forced hot air heat? If so is there one heater for both units? If so, then ask her to check if the air is coming out of the vents when her eyes burn. Ask her what she is doing when her eyes burn. Sometimes ink from a newspaper can make people's eyes and throat burn. --69.141.xxx.xxx

In my opinion it's not your problem until the cops find something. Keep collecting your rent checks and relax.

Good luck. --67.165.xx.xx

Possible source of throat and eye burning would be an electrical appliance with a problem that is heating up a wire. That's a bad throat burner and a bad smell. But I would think the smoke alarm would go off with that. --69.141.xxx.xxx

That sounds like something you may want to smell/sense for yourself when it happens again.

I'd have her call you immediately and have her invite you in to see if there's anything to it.

What can it hurt? --50.45.xxx.xxx

this would be a nonissue for me. I NEVER would have done a drug test on a wall. Cops said it's nothing so it's nothing to me but the crock pot. how long has she been there? you now have the issue of one tenant knowing the other accused them of cooking drugs and sending the police to their door. I would not be a happy person if someone wrongly sent the police to my door. We know they weren't doing anything because they allowed the police in without a warrant.... if they were doing something wrong, they wouldn't have. --72.70.xxx.xx
