I've been having trouble with some people breaking into one of our vacant tax sale houses. We suspected they were the folks living in the house just to the East. I've had to get on them in the past for stupid stuff like running extension cords across our yard to the house on the west (backfeeding electricity).

I'd been getting texts from a nearby neigbhbor who had been having trouble with them as well. She sent me notice a couple of days ago asking if we'd sold the house because someone was "in there." Great...squatters! So we called the cops who came and arrested them: both had warrants out for other stuff. Nonetheless, they were back out a day later (yesterday) and causing my maintenance man trouble as we boarded the place up. Neighbor called cops again....they didn't do anything that time.

This morning's text: "Hey that house next to yours in on fire and yours is damaged too." Nice...

Anyway, I haven't been there yet but she sent me pics. Vinyl on one side of our tax house is melted. The other house looks completely burned from the inside. I asked if anyone was hurt. No, everyone got out. I'm glad. Even though they are goof balls, I don't want to see anyone injured or killed.

Looks like they'll have to go find somewhere else to squat and cause trouble. X-ing fingers they don't decide to move in to our house again. Maintenance boarded up all windows with 3/4 inch plywood, screwed on from the inside, with 2x4 braces across the center of every door and window. Only front door is accessible at this point, with a deadbolt and double hasps/latches with pad locks.

We'll see what happens. But this could be an odd blessing. Insurance may pay out about what we have into this place, at which point we could just sell it as a knock down and come out ahead.

Whew, that's great that the squatters fled and that your place dodged the flames.

I'm shocked that the police didn't oust the squatters after your neighbor had called them for a second time. It sounds like your neighbor stays on top of issues well which is good. Anyway, best of luck with the house. --172.10.xxx.xxx

Ken, we own the house. Bought the lien in 2016 and the owners never redeemed, so we got the Deed in Aug 2017. Just finished the Quiet Title action on it last week...right in time for these folks to almost torch it. We've had insurable interest since getting the Collector's Deed. --173.17.xx.xx
