I hope it's okay to post this here...not about a rental (although it could apply someday).

I found some moderately priced white cabinets that I think I'd like for my own home. But I have white appliances now, and I'm not sure if it's "too much white" to have both white cabinets and appliances? Usually in house ads the white cabinets are paired with stainless appliances. Does anyone have an opinion on this? thanks

It's a personal preference. White cabinets are the "new" rage this year. Have you considered painting your existing cabinets?

In our own home, there were builder basic cabinets in a medium stain in a fairly dark kitchen (only window looks out on a sunroom.)

We already had white appliances, I painted the cabinets white, we added laminate counters with a medium cherry color, brass knobs. It was cheerful, white on white worked, but it was the mid 1990s, lol!

The white look that is in now is often paired with soft grays. Either stainless or white would go with those.

A website that has excellent pictures, lots of inspiration is Houzz.

But, I say, make do with the cabinets you have now, give them a paint job, cuz you have rentals to buy my friend! We'll all enable ya on that! --172.58.xxx.xxx

What makes it pop is having complimentary colors on the wals, backsplash, and countertop. For example, gray or beige walls and a darker color countertop. What you don't want is everything white. --157.245.xx.xx

Won't you feel like a hospital? Look for a show room with kitchens and spend some time viewing what goes together. The floor could pop some color and curtains and mixers and coffee makers. --66.87.xx.xxx

I personally don't like white anything. In the kitchen, I am a great cook but a messy one. White cabinets and me would not get along well. --72.95.xx.xxx

RockM's got it. We do white cabinets, white appliances, black speckled countertop. Walls tan, trim white. Floor typically cherry Allure. All in all, it looks pretty great. I'd say go for it. --74.139.xxx.xxx

When I do white or off-white cabinets in a rental I use stainless appliances, dark granite-y countertop, plastic metal-look backsplash panels, tan walls & generally teak Allure. Very updated & always garners the reaction I want from prospectives.

I abhor white appliances though......those handles get grubby fast. I have hickory in my own house with black appliances. At the time the Maytag store didn't have any scratch & dent stainless appliances so we went with black. I like black & can mix & match stainless & black without much trouble. --104.128.xx.xxx

Thanks--there is the practical aspect of white showing dirt or damage more easily. I definitely want a darker countertop, whatever I end up doing for the other items. --72.188.xxx.xx

J of FL, It's your own home. How long are you planning to keep the kitchen? Sounds like the present kitchen cabinets are going to fall OFF the walls soon!!! IF they are particle board one day you will walking in your kitchen and it will be in a pile on the floor. OK Maybe thats a little harsh.

IF the cabinets are in good condition that you are considering buying AND they will work in your kitchen layout. You may do a few changes or you may add an island. It seems the older homes are too compartmentalized. You may consider taking out a wall to open it up to the dining room. Be sure to support the wall with a beam IF its a supporting wall. PLUS the kitchen is a gathering area so an island creates a nice area.

Consider the TUXEDO Look the top cabinets are one color and the bottom are another color, white wall cabinets and black base cabinets. or a country blue. or two tone gray. Also once the new cabinet are in you can repaint in 10 years or so. YES White will show the dirt.

Get a pc of plywood and paint it the color of cabinets you want and screw it to the wall and paint the baes with the other colors you are planning to use. You can get samples from the paint store: cabinet colors, wall colors, as well as your tile and flooring samples. The flooring may look different in the store than in your home. Its best to take the samples and see what works for you.

How old are the appliances? You may consider painting them until you get newer appliances. Wipe them down with paint thinner prime them then roll with finish coat of rust oleum. Yes the oil base will smell bad. The range use a heat resistance paint. Take your time and it will look nice.

J,

Wifey and I just spent a few hours in IKEA. They STUDY STUDY what buyers want.

White is IN.

We just did a kitchen with the new line of in-stock white cabinets from Lowes. Getting great comments! We've done MANY rentals in white. Clean with a damp cloth like anything else.

We use a charcoal speckled laminate top that has a granite look and a backsplash of glass tiles in grey, black, & white. ($6.95/sf)

This combo looks great with a stainless sink, brushed silver faucet, and white or stainless appliances. (white appliances have black trim)

Wifey wants all white when we redo her kitchen soon!

BRAD

A thought...

Since you plan to remove the exisitng cabinets, buy a few spray cans of white and go crazy on the cabinets. A great test to see if you like white.
