Well,...for a good portion of the North, Jan 20th is considered the average coldest day of the year and the halfway through the heating season. Of course these are averages over many years and rarely applies in any year. Also of course it depends on many factors, jet steam movements, elevation, a bit of difference in latitude, etc, etc.

But kinda nice to think that its "generally" considered half over,..maybe if we are lucky, the better half is coming. --71.192.xxx.xxx

I agree with WMH,...the A/C season down here is always a real doosie. And we worship our A/C compressors too.

Instead of hurricanes, we have a Tornado season which is unpredictable. --68.63.xxx.xxx

You guys can keep the tornadoes and hurricanes,i will take the snow and cold.Today will be 40 so that is no problem, cold enough to keep everyone inside in the low income neighborhoods but not cold enough to cause me any problems. We had 2 weeks of -0 with wind and that was rough but half way through is good by me,once the weather breaks in mid march everything is fine --72.231.xxx.xxx

Meteorologists say that March first is meteorological spring. Sun is tree weeks from being directly over the equator so the effects are already in place. Here in NJ we have had a week or two of seventies in February. And we have had 20 inches of snow in March. There are a lot of things going on to make this happen: moon, earthquakes, sun spots, big solar blowouts. Sorry you are in Massachusetts. I lived there for three years and it's still cold in May. --73.33.xxx.xxx

In penna. the law requires heat on from October 1 until April 1, so our midpoint was New Year Day. --73.141.xxx.xxx
