Pay attention to the news, it looks like Delta airlines is trying to set a precedence in the world of imaginary emotional animals, the exposure alone is a blessing to the folks who need them.

Vee,

I saw that story on the national news last night. It showed a lady on a Delta flight holding a pot-belly pig in her arms and claiming it was her ESA. All kinds of animals are being allowed to fly free because of the scam of getting fake ESA documents online. --68.63.xxx.xxx

The unfortunate part of the whole ESA issue is that it is making it much more difficult for those who truly benefit from an ESA.

As a LL we have a pet friendly policy so it isn't a concern for us but I can see where it is a problem for those who prefer for whatever reason to restrict or prohibit pets. --71.75.xx.xx

U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Disability Rights Section: Service Animals, July 2015; also see

April 25, 2013 HUD position letter.]

An emotional support animal (ESA) or Comfort belongs to a person who is disabled, not another.

The person's health care professional has determined that the presence of the animal is necessary for the disabled person's mental health and written a prescription stating the animal is necessary in the person's home.

The provider needs to be credentialed and able to prescribe in that discipline.

Additionally it need be a provider you are using and during the last 12 months. NOT A MAIL OREDER OR INTERNET CO.

OPM: I've seen that copied and pasted several times on this site. I've tried to do the research to confirm what is written, but I have been unable to do so. Have you actually LOOKED at the "Service Animals, July 2015" document or the "April 25, 2013 HUD position letter"? I've read both, and cannot find anything to support these statements:

1. That they have to have a "prescription." The word "prescription" does not even appear in either of those documents.

2. That the person has to be "credentialed." Again, that word or anything like it does not appear in either of those documents. It says that you can ask that it is from a "physician, psychiatrist, social worker, or other mental health professional." It does not clarify beyond that what qualifies as a "mental health professional."

3. That it has to be someone they "are using and during the last 12 months." I could not find this word or anything similar in either document.

4. That it cannot be a "mail order or internet company." Again, no such restriction exists. If they qualify as a "mental health professional", then they qualify. Period. Again, most of those online places are actually routing people to "mental health professionals" that would qualify.

I only point this out because I see that little bit copied all over the place -- but it all seems to be from one original source that was just an opinion and that opinion does NOT appear to be backed up by either of the official documents referenced.

Flew Delta today and woman had a small dog wearing a service animal vest. It most certainly wasn't a service animal. It was in the aisle jumping on the arm rest of the seat across the aisle to play with a young child. The woman was encouraging it. The dog did not listen to the owner's requests causing her to just pull the dog back by the leash. The dog whined and shook. The flight crew will be filing a report. We spoke to customer service at the gate and will be sending a letter. The woman was bragging that the dog flew 100,000 miles last year. I hope Delta is able to hold this person accountable! On the other hand, I flew a month ago with a visually impaired passenger and a very large German Shepard that sat at the feet of that passenger and never made a peep. --24.61.xxx.xx

It has been a hot topic on a couple of service dog forums I participate in. None of us mind certifying that our dogs are trained. None of us mind providing proof of vet care (rabies vaccine). Heck - I carry a scanned copy of Scooter's records on my phone. If they have a form they want me to turn in when I drop my bag and pick up my preboard document, no problem. I refuse to divulge a lot of info, but my dog is marked and acts like a SD.

Most of us don't mind putting some thing on the dog stating service dog. Mine is always in a vest when working.

48 hours advanced notice is potentially an issue, as sometimes you have to travel last minute.

Scooter sometimes shakes on planes. He stayed on his rug, but it is clear he is a nervous flyer. We are still working on the why. This is with a dog that isn't bothered by anything else. --172.56.xx.xxx
