Had my second abandonment at the beginning of the month, and have everything cleaned and cleaned out, etc.

One weird thing I noticed was that they had left three big puddles of milk (?) on three different countertops, and the milk dried, so that all the liquids evaporated, leaving behind only the solids. The countertop itself is some sort of a black-with-flecks laminate. The dried milk left behind big splotchy ghost stains (pale patches) on the countertops that haven't come up with cleaning.

Two questions-- (a) is there any product out there that's good for getting out ghost stains on laminate? And (b), how would you handle the damage through the SD, if you didn't intend on replacing a whole kitchen's worth of countertops over the splotches? --96.46.xxx.xx

I've usually found basic liquid dishwashing detergent works. However, in your case, I'd suggest maybe using powdered dishwasher detergent. Make it into a paste and grind it into the stain and leave it overnight. Or, you could try the same but make a dam around the stain and add some water to the paste so that it soaks in. At least it would dilute the milk.

My mother-in-law swears by a cleaner called Awesome. Haven't tried it but the way she's raving, I'll have to consider. She also says it's great for grease. --108.69.xxx.xxx

Bar Keepers Friend is amazing stuff, cleans all kinds of stains. Or try a denture cleaning product. --173.170.xxx.xxx

White or apple vinegar takes away many things like this, easy on the abrasive product - my cleaning lady would call this deep cleaning for stain removal. --76.188.xxx.xx

Deanna,

How to charge? My lease is clear: $45 per hour and or replacement cost.

I like Flies' idea of a poulstice - a paste left for a long time. My guess is this is a protein so you need a protein fighter.

If it won't come clean, you hit a key phrase "didn't intend intend on replacing a whole kitchen's worth of countertops..."

I did not intend on them damaging my countertops and sometimes they cannot be cleaned or fixed, and must be replaced due to resident inflicted damage.

I also have no mercy for skippers and those who purposely leave a mess. We go strictly by the book.

I figured if I got bad cuts or another big stain on a countertop I would screw down a nice big wooden cutting board so that it looked like it belonged there. But with three stains that's a bit too many cutting boards. Could also do that with a thick plastic one that looked expensive. It's got to look expensive --73.33.xxx.xxx

Certain types of grout and stone sealers....suitable for counters....darken the existing surface. I dont know if they would work on laminate. --70.30.xx.xxx

I also know that hydrogen peroxide works with fresh blood stains. Dissolves blood immediately. If it dissolves the blood's proteins, it may go after milk's too.

Blood removal experience not related to landlording in case you were wondering. --108.69.xxx.xxx
