I'm going to be doing a granite square tile counter top with liquid nails instead of mortar. I saw that on the DIY channel. I did a counter top 5 years ago with it and everything is still stick (as of last year). My questions was for anyone who has done this before, what do you use for the front face of the counter? What I did before was screw a 2" strip to the counter and tiled that. I used that metal trim piece to cover up the edge of the unfinished piece of tile. It was ok but it was kind of a pain to do. On another one I took a nice piece of finished oak and screwed that to the front. I didn't really care for that because the wood got beat up. I'm just curios to hear what people did in the past when it came to tiling counter tops.

You could cut a miter on pieces of the granite with a wet saw then use 1 part for the nosing & the other part for the counter top. --72.93.xxx.xxx

We did wood once and I'm not a fan. Next time we used silver thresholds. Worked great. Industrial chic. --173.22.xx.xx

Oh and we used 17 x 26 porcelain tiles for countertop itself. No grout needed as they are perfectly straight and butt right up next to each other. We did run a sliver of a bead of black caulk (or grey depending on tile color) to prevent water infiltration. Invisible.

26-in-x-17-in-Ferroker-Aluminio-Porcelain-Floor-and-Wall-Tile is one color we've used.

SUPER expensive as a floor tile. As a countertop? CHEAP! --173.22.xx.xx

I went on a porcelain countertop kick about 7-8 years ago but I used 1/4inch fiberglass backer and also on the face, cut the face from the stock used there and mortar to the front edge, had some wild appliance moves but today nothing there has gone wrong other than a tenant that drained his George Foreman grill into a drawer - he only lasted 3 weeks after that and it cost him dearly. --76.188.xxx.xx

Thanks for all the input.

Funny I tried responding to a thread 6 months ago that elliot and vee where talking about this. I guess it was too old. The miters a good idea, I forgot that I did that before on another job and they were kind of to sharp but who cares I guess. Im not ruling out that idea for this job though.

The granite squares I have does not have any rounded edges are pretty straight. Do you think that would be a good type of tile that I dont have to have any spaces and not use grout? I just WMHs idea.

WMH any strategy behind the 17 x 26 or was that just a random tile you liked? I would think counter depths is 24" cut the 2" edge off for the front of the counter.... --24.1.xx.xxx

We live in an a-frame so the extra two inches was good, in fact the counters on one side are 36" deep so extra tiles added. But we cut the extra 2" off on the other side at the back side to hide any defects. --173.22.xx.xx

You can probably find a local stone installer that will round and polish one edge so you can finish the counter with a rounder edge and a small cut piece underneath. I had it done with travertine for a hearth i built and i came out very nice. I can't remember the cost but it was reasonable. --71.146.xx.xx

Schluter systems has some nice metal c top edging. Of course, 2” ceramic tile edging is a good choice. --72.172.xxx.xx

I used a peice of maple from menards. I cut a 45 degree angle on the front top corner and cut the back top corner off to hold grout between the tile and wood. I glued and stapled the maple to the wood base of the countertop. The top of the maple was flush with the top of the tile. I stained the maple to match the cabinet color. I thought it looked pretty good and really finished the project. My wife NEVER liked cleaning the grout. This was before epoxy was popular. --67.236.xxx.xxx

I've done both a strip of granite tile along the front and a piece of wood trim with a routered edge.

The granite was good for the kitchen because of the potential for water damage. I put a microbevel on the sharp edge with 80 grit sandpaper on a palm sander. Be aware that the raw edge will look lighter than the polished edge, but you can darken it with wet-look sealer to match.

I liked the look of the wood trim better, though. If the wood trim gets too beat up after a couple of years, you can always pull it off and replace it pretty easily. --204.210.xxx.xxx

Thanks for the info! I loved the idea about the 80 grit and the sealer!

I will be going with a section of unfinished hardwood flooring and staining it, I feel safer with that. I have done 2 counter tops like this before but something scares me about having those small pieces glued to the front.

I'm kind of nervous not grouting it, but I'm willing to try it. --73.73.xx.xx

Eddy, you can still round the 2" tile with a belt sander.if you have problem attaching it drill small holes 1/16" about a inch from each end and use a panel nail.charlie................................. Along with the mastic....................... --174.199.xx.xx
