Call a tow truck ? (by Roy [AL]) Posted on: Dec 15, 2017 1:56 AM

Yesterday the Constable and I met at the house where I evicted my tenants (same house with the 8 craters in the backyard). The house was empty, tenants were gone and there was no damage to the house. That is the good news.

As you know, all evicted tenants seem to leave something behind. My tenants have left a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu parked in the garage.

This Chevy appears well kept and a nice looking car too. The only problem is the car has no wheels on it and the car is sitting on concrete blocks! Actually, the front disc brakes are touching the concrete floor! Plus, this car has no license plate on it either which means this car has been here for awhile.

Twice yesterday I called my evicted tenants and left messages for them to move this car now. They are not returning my calls.

The Constable told me I can have it towed off.

How does a towing company tow a car with no wheels on it? All you see is 4 rusted disc brake rotors,...that is it. Whoever removed the wheels, ..did leave all of the lug nuts.

I will take a photo of this car and post it here later on. How long would you allow the car to stay there before you called a towing company? I do want my garage back.

Roy, they can either put a couple of rims & tires on the back wheels or put wheel dollies under the wheels. When you call just let them know there aren't any tires on the car. --72.93.xxx.xxx

Here in MO, it takes a while to notify all parties on the vehicle title before towing. Since the constable lshould know....call the towing company now. --72.172.xxx.xx

I will call the towing company today and tell them if the car is still there at 9:00a.m. Saturday morning,...it is theirs for the taking. If this car runs, I would assume it is worth at least $2,000.00.

It is actually a 2010 model,..not a 2005. They listed it on their rental application 1.5 years ago. --68.63.xxx.xxx

Does it look like it may run? Here cars like that which run could sell for a pretty good price. Check with DMV to see if you can get title for storage fees. If you can, file for it if you think the car might run. Then get some used rims and tired from a junkyard, put them on and sell it. Do online research to see what value is.

Even if it's really junk, you might get $200-500 from a junk yard if you look around.

I work at a towing company in Va and deal with this type of situation often. It is very easy to resolve. Call a towing company and simply tell them you want the car off your property. Tell them there are no wheels on it.

They will tow it off, here in Va it is often free. When they get the car to their lot, they will notify the police that they have it. They will also send a certified letter to the owner telling them they are responsible for the cost of the tow and storage on their lot until it is picked up. If it isnt picked up in 30 days, the state gives the tower the title paperwork and they either sell it at auction or junk it. --70.184.xxx.xxx

Too bad the craters in your backyard weren't so large you could push this car into one of them and just cover it up with dirt.

Roy, turn that car into cash. Don’t just give it away. Call a few junk yards and ask them how much they will give you for it. My bet is you can get $200 -$300, and they Haul it away free. --75.141.xxx.xxx

Some charities will tow away the vehicle. You get the donation amount to deduct from your taxes. At least this year, who knows about deducting it next year. Most want the title signed over though, but it can't hurt to ask.

Problem I ran into in NH with a junker ... nobody would take a car less than 10 yo without the title. Had to call the police ... they authorized the tow.

In MA the city has a removal program. But it takes WEEKS ... they tag it then tow it - eventually. So it's easier just to drag it into the street (its gone within a hour). --198.168.xx.xxx

Have dragged several to the street since we didn't have title. Don't get caught doing it by cops though.

My patience ran out today. I called a towing company and they winched it up on a flatbed. This was a vehicle that was about to be 'repoed' by some used car lot. The car is gone and I am happy. Those front rotors did gouge my concrete a little but not a big deal. --68.63.xxx.xxx

In the late 1980's through 2001 I owned a towing company here in New Jersey. Like Patrick [VA] stated who also has a towing company, we handled abandoned cars basically like he did, HOWEVER we hated getting these type of cars. Why? They take up room, they are basically worthless junk, since your tenants's car had no wheels makes it more of a p.i.t.a. to move and 30 days of storage fees will never be recovered. As a side note, when ever we did police tows for low lifes that were caught driving without insurance, registration or valid license and the car was usually crap, many times we get stuck with it since the car cannot be released without police authorization and many times these low lifers cannot afford to resolve their problems with the municipality to get the car released. Also, in these same cases, whenever the owner comes to the tow yard to remove their personal belongings, they seldom return to get their cars out of impound. I'm sure Patrick [VA] has experienced this many times.

John, isn't it worth it to tow it and stick it in the corner of the lot till you can legally sell it for scrap? I would have thought that was worth quite a bit more than a normal tow --72.231.xxx.xxx

How old is the credit report on these tenants? They might have payments on the car and they are not paying on it.....so it might be easier to have the used car lot tow the car instead. --24.101.xxx.xxx
