I am thinking that I need to start couple summer projects to put floor drains for any of the bathrooms that still have clawfoot tub. It seems that tenants can't help themselves to let water onto the floor when taking showers.

My handyman was saying, they had this clawfoot thing since century ago.. probably didn't have this much water leak judging from the floor condition. Are people nowaday really this dumb and irresponsible? (probably is).

I have replaced couple bathrooms with the new tub/shower enclosure. Figured it will be cheaper to put floor drain for the occasional accidents.

any other idea to water proof it? --173.48.xx.xxx

I would put in new tubs before I went through the hassle of floor drains. --50.107.xxx.xxx

If you're talking about putting some type of floor drain in there to catch water from sloppy tenants you're doing almost as much work maybe maybe even more than replacing $120 bath tub --152.208.xx.xx

We had this problem at our son's house. Solution was to wrap tub on two sides (one long, lone short) with PVC Wainscoting, glued to wall, topped with a thin line of nice tile.

Then a slightly tipped shelf of PVC - tipped so water drains into tub.

Now one shower curtain at the open back of the shower and one on the other long side. It worked out great - both looks-wise and from a usability standpoint.

Took a few hours. Had they more time, building a small wall at the open end of the tub would have been a nice enhancement. --173.22.xx.xx

Do both and remove the doubt, sliding doors arent closed, curtain not all the way, use hand made wings on tub corners to help but always rushing students have this problem, be sure there is bath ventilation while you are doing bathroom work. --76.188.xxx.xxx

Yes,some people are this dumb and irresponsible these days.Putting in a floor drain would require more effort than replacing the clawffot tub with a regular tub and the regular tub would help get the place rented quicker and for more money --24.92.xx.xx

I wouldn't do a floor drain personally. You would have to ensure that the entire floor is now waterproofed and "slants" to the drain. Also, unless you REALLY want to keep that clawfoot tub.

I just had a tenant move in (bathroom on 2nd floor and is a "regular" tub/shower) and I received a call from her then next day complaining that the bathtub leaked all over the floor when they took showers that night. I went over the next day to look at it. I immediately went to the kitchen and looked at the ceiling ... she said "what are you looking for?" I said if the pipes are leaking - they will leak right here - I don't see any water stains.

I then went up to the bathroom and ran the water. The girl said "oh we were taking a shower, not a bath" ... I said if it's leaking from the drain it shouldn't matter what I run. I then plugged drain to let it sit - still nothing. I then ran the shower (cold and hot water) ... no leaks.

The mother comes in and I'm telling her what I've been doing and there is no water. I asked her where she saw the water on the floor and she showed me. I then said "did everyone have the shower curtain on the INSIDE of the tub"?

She wasn't sure - she said they should know that but would make sure they do from here on out. I told her to call me if she sees water again and knows for a fact that the shower curtain was inside the tub.

No calls since :) So yeah - they ARE that dumb! --67.246.xx.xx

Sometimes tubs have developed a slant toward the center of the room and the shower water runs along the top of the tup and right onto the floor. I had to buy some of those plastic glue on dams to keep that from happening. Shower curtain doesn't work for that. --73.33.xxx.xxx

Maybe you already have one, but my hubby had installed in an apartment that he rented 40 years ago (with a clawfoot tub)an oblong shower rod - suspended from the ceiling. He bought the parts, landlord had it installed. Two regular shower curtain liners kept on the inside really kept the water inside of the tub.

That house, years later, was part of a "designer house" fundraiser for the local hospital. We bought tickets and went for old time's sake. The tub and curtain rod were still in place in the apartment! --71.175.xxx.xxx

It is not just a matter of installing a floor drain but a waterproof membrane such a Schluter ditra membrane along with ceramic or porcelain tiles. Always buy shower heads that have a narrow spray pattern as well. --74.220.xxx.xx

I built a wall and shortened the opening of one of my tubs because water kept flowing onto the floor even with a curtain, when I took a shower there. I had to try it to see if something was wrong. So he opening is half the normal 60 inch opening. I cuts down on water falling outside the tub. I used to find 3 inches of water on the floor, and the tenant wouldn't clean it up. It would slowly leak into the bathroom below. --71.176.xxx.xx

I just bought a beautiful clawfoot tub and two issues are really bothering me.

First, Lead based paint

Second, keeping the water from falling around the sides as there is no access to clean it up. Interesting dialogue here. --68.54.xx.xxx

They are definitely this dumb. We've seen a lot of train wrecks and incomprehensible stupidity.

When tenants with clawfeet sign leases, we explain to them in great detail how to hang the shower curtains on both sides of the tub, overlapping at the faucet. It usually falls on deaf ears, and we have to physically show them, or do it for them. Stunning.

Floor drain very expensive. Regular tub replacement only moderately expensive.
