Removal Gas Meter (by Eric [OH]) Apr 20, 2021 9:41 PM

Has anyone have had the Gas n Electric company remove the gas meter from a residential property. I put electric in my name July 2020, started working on property and now gas meter was removed within the last month or two.

In my neck of the woods, the electric and gas companies and two separate entities. But yes; I have one house that is all electric but, at one time, must have had gas. The line is still there (capped off of course) but the meter has been removed.

I've never had them actually remove a gas meter. My gas provider will sometimes lock off a meter so that it can only be reactivated by them. Occasionally they will use the curb cock to stop the gas from entering the building. The only time that I've had them do anything to the meters is when they swap them out for a recalibrated one. In MA the gas companies are required by state regulation to do this every so years. I believe it's 5 or 7 tears. --71.184.xxx.xx

Here they shut off then lock out meter where the rental unit is vacant. I guess the gas company is concerned about someone breaking lock then turning gas back on. --99.236.xxx.xxx

Pain in the neck. Yes, the gas company here will remove a meter if there has been no service for a while. I don't know what their parameters are, but if yours has already been removed, I'd just wait until you're ready for gas and have them replace it. In Houston, you have to have a licensed plumber perform a pressure test under a permit once there has been no activity for 3 months. --23.30.xx.xxx

They do that here when the gas service has been turned off for a while (I think it's a year or more). Once they remove the meter they won't turn it back on until you get it "green stickered". That's where the plumber has to pull a permit, pressure test it, and the building inspector tapes the sticker to the riser on the gas line by the meter. The gas company technician won't put the meter back until he see's the date on the green sticker or the approval from the building inspector on the inspection sheet.

Duke energy removes the gas meter after no use for a period of time. Some apartments have gas stoves and the gas cost of meter rental is over $40 per month. The tenants use hot plates instead.

then when a new tenant moves in Duke charges $75 to hook it back up. Really a bad situation for all parties. --24.123.x.xxx
