The gas company will pull the meter if it has not been used in some time.

Just call them up and ask. If you are fixing up a property that has not been occupied in a long time, that's a possible reason. --24.180.xx.xx

not sure of the timing but they remove them here after service has been terminated. My assumption, based on nothing, is that they don't want someone illegally (and incorrectly) hooking up service themselves --72.70.xxx.xx

That happens here, more common to find electric meter pulled than gas though.I would call the gas company and ask what needs to be done to get it hooked back up,you might need an inspection and it may take awhile to get someone there --72.231.xxx.xxx

I've never had them actually remove a gas meter. My gas provider will sometimes lock off a meter so that it can only be reactivated by them. Occasionally they will use the curb cock to stop the gas from entering the building. The only time that I've had them do anything to the meters is when they swap them out for a recalibrated one. In MA the gas companies are required by state regulation to do this every so years. I believe it's 5 or 7 years.

I've bought properties where the gas hasn't been used for awhile. With these properties, I'm required to have a licensed gas fitter perform a pressure test on the gas lines before I can get the service reactivated. --71.184.xxx.xx

We also have to do a pressure test before a meter can be re-installed. Make sure the inlet and outlet pipes are capped. If not, bugs and dirt will find their way in and wreak havoc on your gas appliances when service is restored. --107.141.xx.xxx
