Accent Wall (by J [FL]) Oct 21, 2020 3:19 PM
Message:

I had to paint the unit I'm working on SW Navajo White (a pale tan color), because the trendier/darker neutrals just didn't work with the brown floor tiles and lack of natural light in this unit.

I have never done this but I am thinking of doing an accent wall on a small wall in the living room to help stave off the dreaded "can we paint" requests.

Should I just pick a color on my own that I think fits in with the rest of the scheme, or ask the T what color they want when once they have put down a deposit?

And any color suggestions for accent wall? Thanks.

Pick your own. If you give them the choice of colors on one wall, it will give them inspiration to want more. If you allow one wall to be painted, how can you be firm on the rest? --108.69.xxx.xxx

Pick your own. I use Benoire Navajo White because it goes with our brown color palette flooring but I wouldn’t call it a tan color. --73.17.xx.xxx

accent walls are a great idea, draw the eye into the space and glam up the unit.

most,of all,...they allow the LL to use up all those odds and ends of paint that are still good, left over and taking up space.

mix up enough of the same type of finish paints and squirt in some universal colorant to deepen the shade / color,...and there ya go.

I get great pleasure from throwing away 5 or 6 (now) empty cans which I was staring at for too long a time. --172.250.xx.xxx

For my nicer units, I use accent walls.

What color?

Well I use Swiss coffee as my normal color on three walls so I can always touch it up. On my accent wall I use Home Depot Opppps paint. At $9 a gal, I find something will look alright.

In BR and LR I try for more masculine colors, and for the kitchen and bath more feminine colors for accents. --24.101.xxx.xx

Not to be argumentative, but what's a more feminine color in a kitchen and bath, than a BR and LR?

Pink kitchen? Lilac bathroom? Brown bedroom? Beige LR?

Just curious. --50.82.xxx.xxx

I have used Navajo White. I would NOT do an accent wall. It will just look stupid and out of place. Most of the ones I have seen look silly. I would only do that with something like brick or a texture or wood panelling. There is an accent wall in my living room but it is knotty pine paneling and it's gorgeous real wood planks over the fireplace. --71.104.xx.xxx

Strangely enough the SW Navajo White is a tan. It is one shade lighter than "Softer Tan". I know that BM and the Behr NW is more of a yellow. --72.188.xxx.xxx

Pick your own... some paint stores have a color wheel thing that will help you select colors that go well with what’s already there --99.92.xxx.xxx

We advertise it as a Feature wall. I pick color. But a friend rents in a large complex and they were given the choice of three color swatches when they moved in. Each year they when they resign they get to pick another color for Living room feature wall or room a wall in another room like the bedroom. They pick from three chosen swatches. --99.203.xx.xx

Plenty, I wonder if they make more money offering that?

Otherwise, it is just more paint to store and buy and more time consumed.

When I was touching up my rental between tenants I ran out of paint for the BR and so I used the LR paint on one small wall behind the door as that is all I lacked. The BR color is a light blue and the LR color is a tan. Unless you really pay attention and look close you would never know that the one small wall isn't blue. It worked out great and I didn't have to buy another gallon of paint. Unfortunately, I painted all the rooms different colors but I won't do that again. I don't think that an accent wall would make me anymore money and could be considered a negative to some. --73.120.xx.xxx

It was a large complex, maybe 600 units. Maybe takes 1/2 gallon to paint an accent wall. By limiting the choices it does help on cost and storage. It sure does help keep residents and makes each apartment more and more like home. This particular friend said she had been there years and she felt like they cared about her and she was not moving. It was home. What would you paid (or paint) to hear that at each year's lease signing? --99.203.xx.xx

Well not to be sexist but if you ask 100 woman what are the two most important rooms in the house - what will you think they will say? You gotta keep the lady of the house so you cater to them with accent colors that appeal to most important rooms to a woman.

They have 65% of the say

Ask 100 men the same question and you will get two different rooms....paint them a color to cater to them, but they only 35% of say in the choice of the house --24.101.xxx.xx

Swiss Coffee ain't happening since I've already done two rooms now in Navajo.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'm going to do the wall either a blue or a green. --72.188.xxx.xxx
